At the press conference for her new film, Suzy wore a radiant smile, answering every question about the movie with bright enthusiasm. She would occasionally turn to playfully tease the director. But deep down, she was silently cursing, wondering when this long ass tiring day would finally end.
The three-hour interview wasn't entirely focused on her, at least. With nearly twenty cast members taking turns answering questions, she had brief moments to catch her breath. In a fleeting moment of longing for the baby waiting for her at home, Suzy temporarily forgot she was playing the leading role. But after two full rounds, the spotlight inevitably found its way back to her.
"Actress Suzy, what are your thoughts on recent dating rumors? Every time you film a movie, there are rumors about you dating your co-stars. How do you respond to this? Are you really as flirty as they say?"
Such tasteless personal attacks weren't new to Suzy. Fifteen years in the industry had honed her vigilance and the ability to remain calm, rather than jumping out to beat these reporters' asses. Yet, even as the years passed, Suzy can't understand why she had to endure this. Why was it acceptable for them to assault her with words, but she couldn't respond with physical violence?
After all, being a celebrity was a challenging profession. Living and dying by one's craft, Suzy maintained her professionalism until the end. She just wanted to choose the right attitude for her response - cold, indifferent, or humorous? Before arriving at the filming location, she had promised her baby that she wouldn't let them see her true self. Because her baby was the jealous type. And her baby wanted to be the only one who could unleash the fierce demons that lurked behind her friendly facade.
So Suzy countered the reporter, "How would you like me to react?"
He was caught off guard by her response. He had prepared himself to deal with a seasoned idol's experience, deliberately trying to provoke her, but hadn't expected her to turn the question back on him.
"What?"
"These eyes find romance even in telephone poles. These lips, with just a hint of a bunny smile, can captivate every man in South Korea. What exactly do you think I need to prove?"
The crowd buzzed briefly before falling silent. But if things had ended there, the Korean entertainment industry would have been a peaceful place where no one felt pressured enough to take their own life. Apparently, the reporter's publication felt the previous question wasn't sensitive enough, so they sent another to increase the sensationalism. As if trying to recover from a loss, or seeking revenge against Suzy.
"Let's say you're not dating your co-stars. Then what's your type? After breaking up with the two top-notch Lee actors, what kind of person do you want to be with?"
Gosh, so he knew her weakness was love. But his efforts were in vain, as he only mentioned what everyone already knew. The things only she and her baby knew were forbidden territory, Suzy's boundaries and pride.
Suzy merely curved her lips into a slight smile and dropped a weightless answer. Her face was undisturbed, but the waves that followed crashed through the hall. Nothing like her current composed demeanor. She was aware of what her words could cause. A cruel enough statement could take a life. But a warm word could provide comfort through a cold winter night.
"I don't date people who aren't worthy."
So everything about her baby must be worthy.
Park Chaeyoung, who had been sitting cross-legged, lowered her feet tapping against the soft carpeted floor. Then crossed them the other way. She couldn't understand why she felt so anxious.
"I wonder if the MBE title, #1 on global Apple Music, and #8 on Billboard are enough?"
She truly didn't know if these and dozens of other achievements were enough to earn Suzy's definition of "worthy." Because she had been hurt too many times in the past. Because she came to her while at the peak of glory while having no achievements of her own.
Because Chaeyoung didn't know she was the only one Suzy needed.
And because Chaeyoung had depression.
After all, loving someone with depression is difficult. There's no way to love without love.
In the dim light, who were you thinking of?
