If it wasn't for crying kids, the stroll would have been fine. Questions filled the atmosphere. Kids gathered around Alex and Olivia crying, since they were the oldest ones in the neighborhood.
"Where's my mommy?" A little girl said with tears in her eyes.
"I don't know, probably dead," Olivia grimly said. Alex nudged her and gave her a look, but she just shrugged it off. Olivia hated kids because she thought they were loud and annoying.
"We don't really know we're they are," He paused. "But don't worry, just gather up all the food you can find and save it till I come back to help, that goes to all of you."
Some nodded their heads an went into there homes, while others were still crying and sulking. Olivia stepped in front of Alex and gave him her special, "what's wrong with you" look.
"What are you doing? Are you now like the leader of the neighborhood all of a sudden?" She whispered angrily.
"I'm not going to leave them there alone and afraid. Plus that gives them something to do instead of crying over there parents." He responded.
He crouched near a crying little boy who looked like he was seven.
"Hey, its going to be ok little guy. All you need to do I-," Alex was cut off by the sight of a house with smoke coming out from the windows. "Hold that thought. Olivia stay here and comfort them while I see what's up."
"Really Alex? You know what I think about-"
"Just see if they don't get hurt. You were a kid too you know." Alex snapped while he rushed to the house. He tried to open the door, but it was locked. Alex heard a yell on the second floor. He had to help the child, but how was he suppose to get in? After going around the house, Alex saw that the patio door wasn't locked. He opened it and was tackled by a black smoke. His eyes and lungs burned and quickly shut the door. Alex needed something to cover his face so he could go through the smoke. His shirt wouldn't work, it would make no difference. But that was his only option. He pulled the shirt collar over his nose and eyes, and went into the home.
Smoke. Smoke was everywhere around the house. The kitchen was blazing with fire. Whatever was in the oven, it caused a chain reaction of fire. He started searching for a fire extinguisher, but realized that he has to help the kid in the second floor. It was already spread to the hallways and the stairs was just in the other side. He paused, but Alex knew what he had to do. Alex rushed through the fire, and made his way up the stairs.
Alex didn't realize he was on fire until he saw that his pants were turning black. He was astonished. Why didn't he feel any pain? Maybe he was already feeling enough pain that he was going numb. Alex saw five closed doors in the hallway.
He opened the closest one and found the what he assumed was the guest room. No kid. The smoke was starting to get thicker, but he was breathing more normally. Alex heard a scream on the far right room. He slammed the door open and saw a kid crouched on the corner, coughing and crying. He looked as pale as a ghost and about nine.
"Hey, are you ok?" Alex said reaching out for him. All of a sudden, the kid looked at Alex with scared eyes and yelled, "MOMMY IM SCARED," and he was slammed by an invisible force and fell un conscience.
