It had been a couple months since the sexual assault from David started. Momma tried to stop it as much as she could, but it never helped. School had started up again and James was a head of me in school. He skipped a few grades and was now in ninth grade, while I was still in fifth. He was my only friend, considering no one else would come near the messily dressed form that was me.
James had just turned thirteen the day before school started. I spent the whole day with him at his house. The only party he got was his grandparents coming up to visit along with me getting to stay the night. David was pissed when he found out that I was staying at James's.
It had been a week since his birthday and he kept babbling on about something his mom was getting him. I was excited to find out what James's present was. Momma had a surprise waiting for me after school the same day. David was still at work so we could celebrate the good news. After jumping around excitedly for almost thirty minutes a knock sounded on the door.
"Ash! I have something to tell you! It's important!" James nearly sang as he bounced around the porch. One look from Momma sent me out the door with a bigger smile than James's.
"Good, because I have amazing news also! You go first," I exclaimed. James took my arm and drug me off the porch with surprising gentleness.
"Meet Billy!" Sitting on the ground behind a chair was beagle puppy. It's floppy ears bounced up as the puppy jumped to meet me. I grinned and dropped to my knees to pet him.
"He's so cute!" I said to James as he sat next to me. He flashed me a bright smile before quickly looking down at Billy.
