Chapter Fourteen - An Impossible Task

"WHAT?!" Elise yelled, making Simon wince involuntarily. The others all remained calm, obviously used to her outbursts.

"You can't be serious?!" She continued to shout, as Thom closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.

They were currently stood just outside of the Castle wall, leaning against the cold stone out of earshot from any eavesdropping locals passing by.

"So let me get this straight." Thom sighed, "The Queen has just mysteriously disappeared, and now the Prince has asked us to find her and return her here."

"Yes." Simon nodded. "And she must also be alive or else we will be killed." He added quietly, causing Elise to scoff in frustration and throw her arms in the air.

"Great, just great. So now we're the lap dogs of the high-and-mighty Prince, going out to do his dirty work." She ranted, the rest of the group not looking too pleased either.

"I say we forget it, let them sort it out themselves, like 'Lise said we're not here to do their dirty work." Sam pitched in, his face set with a grim expression.

"Yeah I'm not running around after some missing Royal bird, I've got better things to take up my time." Rob grinned, winking over at Lena, who only rolled her eyes in response.

One by one, each of the group started to voice their opinion, none of which were particularly positive. Simon stood in silence, unable to get a word in and at a loss of what to do.

Only Lena remained silent, her arms folded and a frown on her face as she studied Simon. Just as the noise of dissent started to peak, Lena took a step forward into the middle of the small circle they had created.

"EVERYBODY SHUT UP!" She bellowed, the group falling into stunned silence. "Alright," she sighed, "Now as much as I love our free and easy lifestyle, doing what we want when we want kind of thing; but don't you think that for once it would be nice to have a real purpose? A quest? A proper adventure?" She glanced around the group, the excitement clear in her voice and her blue-green eyes shining, the others shuffling on the spot and casting guilty glances and small smiles at each other and Simon.

"Plus," She added, confident she had managed to change their minds, "from the sounds of it, I don't think we have a choice."

Her words were met with a chorus of groans, but from the tentative smiles and chuckles mixed in she knew she had managed to bring them round.

Sam laughed ruefully as he ran his hands down his face. "I don't know about you lot, but right now, I could do with a drink." He sighed, throwing his arm over a laughing Elise's shoulder as the group started to make their way back into the centre of the small town surrounding the Castle.

"Thank you." Simon mouthed silently to Lena as they walked slowly behind everyone.

"No problem." She mouthed back, smiling and squeezing his arm, her hand lingering there for a second before Rob called her from in front.

Lena gave him one last smile before striding ahead, Simon watching her as she walked away.
