"Hello my dears." Mrs. Grunwald welcomes.
"You knew we would be here. You saw us coming, didn't you?" I ask, with the giddiness of a kindergartener.
"You've grown wiser, my dear."
I don't think that would take a genius to figure out though. I'm sure anyone who's running away from an angry psychopath plotting to kill them would gain a few extra IQ points.
"Who's there?" My old friend, Caleb emerges from a shadowy corner.
"Alison? I thought you were dead." I laugh. Caleb was never a good liar.
"Stop trying to pretend we haven't met. By now, I'm sure that everyone in this room knows it was me who sent you to Rosewood. It was me who told you to do some spying. Of course, I didn't know you'd go as far as sleeping with Hanna to finish the job." I can't help but grin.
"I love Hanna, don't you ever say I don't, " he screams back.
I bet he expects me to flinch, but I just yawn in his face. I can see a small fire in his eyes. Maybe he did truly love her, how would I know what it feels like to be loved? Everyone I've dated was just using me. On the bright side, now I don't feel bad about using them.
"Glad to see you've missed me." I say before I walk out of the room.
I make my way to the nearest vacant room to walk into an explosion of dullness. It's almost like this place is haunted. Beside the bed is a phone that looks like it hasn't been used in years. I pick up the phone and start to dial the first number that comes to mind. Relief spreads through me as I hear Jake pick up.
Hello?Who is this?
Relax, it's me.
Alison?
Who do you think? You shouldn't be the one suprised this call is happening. I'm glad you're alive, brother.
The call ends. Why would he hang up on me like that? Probably because I called him my brother. Yet another secret kept and lie told. Sometimes I wonder if my whole family is a lie. I wouldn't be surprised if it was. My parents keep just as many secrets as I do, the only difference is mine stay hidden until I want them to be found.
"Who were you calling?" Cece asks. She stands by the door, hesitant to come in. "Jake," I tell her, "do you want to explain what happened with A, or are you just going to stand there and gawk?"
"Fine." She sits down beside on the bed and tells a story unlike any she's ever told. She told the truth.
