"Your worst battle is between what you know and what you feel."
As promised, as soon as Claire got home from school she ran into the living room, where Blake and I were watching a movie, and sat down right in the middle of us. She made herself comfortable by leaning up against my body and placing her feet on Blake's thighs."Did you do anything fun at school?" I asked her, running my hand over her head.
"We were learning the times tables." Claire pouted. "It was boring."
Blake then turned to her and frowned. "What happened to your hair?" I then noticed that it was no longer in a braid, but now messily flowing down her back.
Claire's face fell and tears brimmed in her eyes.
"A-a boy ruined it! He p-pushed me over in the playground and r-ruined it." She turned and buried her head into my neck, I could feel her tears flooding my skin. I looked at Blake and gave him a pointed look. He clearly couldn't deal with tears, he looked at Claire and then to me and shrugged his shoulders like he didn't know what to do.
"What's his name, Sweetheart?" I brushed my fingers through her hair in an attempt to get her to calm down.
"B-Bradly." She told me through her tears.
"Did he do anything else?"
"He called me names and said that my mummy left 'cause of me." My eyes furrowed at that and I could feel my anger levels rising.
"How old is this boy?"
"He's 2 years older than me."
I looked back over to Blake who was furiously tapping away at his phone.
"Blake." I got his attention. "Could you hold her for a second? I have something I need to do." I didn't wait for his answer, only passed the crying girl to him and walked out of the room.
I found Florence out in the garden. She appeared to be watering the flowers, an easy smile on her face. Hearing me coming, she turned around to address me. Whatever she was about to say died in her throat at the anger on my face.
"Cassidy dear, are you alright?" She looked concerned and dropped the watering bucket on the floor.
"Do you know a boy called Bradley from Claire's school?" I said, getting straight to the point.
"Oh no, what has he done now?"
"He said some stuff to Claire, I just need to talk to his parents."
"They used to live in the pack house but I think they're living down the street now, let me write down their address for you."
As soon as she gave me the address and how to get there, I made my way to their house. No body stopped me in the street, they must have seen how incredibly angry I was and decided it was best to leave me alone. Claire was sweet and innocent, I was going to make sure this didn't happen again, seeing her tears ripped my heart right out of my chest. It scared me how attached I am to Claire after just a day of meeting her, seeing how important she was to Blake made her important to me too. I had to make sure she didn't get hurt.
