There are more than 17,500 recorded butterfly species yet every single butterfly is special.
"This is the blue copper, it's one of my favorites." I say, showing Oliver a picture in my Butterfly Species and Facts book.
"I like that one." Oliver says pointing to an orange butterfly.
"Ah, that's the orange barred sulphur." I look up into his glistening eyes. "So Ollie huh?"
"What?"
"Your sister calls you Ollie."
"Oh yeah, she does that I guess."
"I like it. Ollie. Has a nice ring to it."
He doesn't say anything, just smiles. His earthy green eyes meet my ocean blues. His hand lifts off the book and the pages blow around due to the a.c. His hand then moves to my jawline and up to my cheek. I'm afraid he can hear my heart pounding. We kiss as the book lands on the metamorphosis page. Ollie's soft lips press against mine. The moment is still and peaceful even though my mind is complete chaos. When we finally break away Oliver says, "I'll see you later." And simply walks out of my room. I say nothing and remain in my chair for another good 10 minutes before I realize what just happened.
Oliver kissed me. He kissed me. Ollie kissed me. I'm still saying it to myself when Janet comes in.
"You look awfully happy today Miss Caroline." She says as she pokes an IV into my arm.
"I guess." I say trying to contain my excitement.Janet raises an eyebrow. "Anything happen?"
"No."
Janet raises the other eyebrow. "Oh? So nothing happened between you and a certain I don't know...boy?"
"We kissed!" The words slip out of my mouth before I can stop them.
Janet drops her clipboard and it lands softly on my lap. Is she going to yell? I brace myself but I never expected this. "Oh Caro-bear!" She hugs me and starts shaking with excitement. "Oh my little Caroline has a boyfriend! After all this time, I never thought you would even speak to another your age! Now you've got a boyfriend! You were so antisocial! And I mean- A-N-T-I social! You-"
"Okay! I get it Janet." I interrupt her.
She clenches her teeth. "Sorry."
"We're not even dating. It was one kiss. Could mean nothing."
Janet laughs and pulls of her stethoscope. "My Caroline got a kiss. That does not mean nothing."
