You can't go up in ranks unless you physically fight for said rank. And if a ranking member died you will fight anyone and everyone who wants the position until you win. If you are a pup you will remain a pup due to training purposes. You physically stop being a pup when you are 15+ but will still be called a pup until the pack decides you've earned enough respect. (This works differently throughout the different packs)
