"Right I guess we should get some sleep." Este said once they were back inside the van,
"I'll keep watch for the rest of the night." Alana volunteered, "You've got to drive tomorrow E and Yelly you...you need to rest." Alana said before either of her sisters could protest.
"Well alright then you little iguana, but wake me if anything happens." Este said before kissing her sister on the head, she got in under the covers and was asleep a few moments later.
"For someone who normally stays awake all night it beats me how she can go to sleep so quickly." Danielle chuckled as she listened to Este snoring quietly,
"You need to get some sleep to D." Alana said with a concerned look on her face.
"I'm okay for the moment Lans." Danielle said as she gave her baby sister a reassuring smile.
"Here." Alana went to hand the necklace back to Danielle,
"No that's for you baby girl." Danielle said pushing Alana's hand away,
"But Mom gave it to you, it's your favourite." Alana protested,
"I know but I really want you to have Lans, please it would make me really happy if you'd wear it." Danielle said.
Alana tears in her eyes nodded and put the necklace on, she then gave her sister the biggest hug, crying against her shoulder,
"It's okay baby girl, it's okay." Danielle said starting to become emotional herself.
"I love you Danielle." Alana sobbed,
"I love you to Lans." Danielle said rubbing her sister's back.
***************
Alana spent the remainder of the night alternating between silently crying and watching her sister sleeping. She wasn't sure if Danielle was having a nightmare or if the infection was already affecting her as Danielle's body kept trembling and she had a grimace on her face.
Alana knelt down next to her older sister and gently brushed a few stray strands of hair off her face. Danielle's skin felt like it was on fire and Alana jerked her hand away in surprise before gently placing it back on her sister's forehead.
"Oh my god Yelly you're burning up." Alana cried out loud.
She pulled the blanket off Danielle and looked around for the first aid kit, once she found it she grabbed the instant ice pack and after squeezing and shaking it a few times she placed it across Danielle's hot forehead. Danielle sighed at the feel of the cold compress against her skin.
Alana pulled a blanket around her own shoulders and sat down next to Danielle holding her hand, she started to sing softly,
"Tale as old as time, true as it can be, barely even friends, then someone bends unexpectedly. Just a little change, small, to say the least, both a little scared, neither one prepared, Beauty and the Beast. Ever just the same, ever a surprise, ever as before, ever just as sure as the sun will rise."
She laid down next to her sister, falling asleep just as the sun began to rise on the horizon.
********
Next morning Este awoke to find both her sisters sleeping together, holding hands. She quietly pulled the photo of her family out of her backpack and stared at it for awhile remembering back to when it had been taken.
The whole family had gone out to get ice creams, Alana had only been two years old and had managed to get ice cream all over her face, Danielle had also dropped some down her top. Este had been eight at the time and didn't have a care in the world.
