Epilogue

Este knew they had to reach Montreal before nightfall, driving during the day was hard enough what with having to manoeuvre around all the abounded vehicles but it made it much easier spotting any of the infected. So far they had made good time and if they kept moving at the current speed they would reach Canada and Montreal in less then six hours.

'FUCK." Este screamed, as another car came flying out onto the road almost hitting them. She had to swerve hard to the left then quickly back to the right to keep the van on course, she looked in the rear view mirror as the other car slammed into the back of a tray track, she could see people fighting inside the car,

"Do you think they were infected E?" Alana asked,

"Yeah most likely, Lonz could you check how D is doing," Este asked concerned her sister got knocked around in the back of the van.

Alana climbed into the back and removed the cloth bag from Danielle's head, she stared into two dull yellow eyes as Danielle tried to bite her, she jumped back a little not wanting to get too close but continued staring, her brain could not fully believe what she was seeing.  Eventually Alana couldn't look at her sister anymore, she dropped the cloth bag and hurried back to the front of the van.

"Danielle okay?" Este asked,

"Yeah." was all Alana said, she started fiddling with the radio to take her mind off Danielle, Este continued focusing on the road.

The smell of fresh pulsating blood was driving Danielle's infected brain insane, somehow she managed to free her bound hands and pulled herself forward towards the front of the van, once she had reached the front she pulled herself up and lunged at Este, she ripped a huge chunk of flesh from Este's neck severing her carotid artery, blood sprayed up all over the roof.

"OH MY GOD, DANIELLE NO, NO. DANIELLE STOP IT."Alana screamed as she tried to pull Danielle away,

Fear, pain, horror flashed across Este's face as she realised what was happening,

"Six hours Yelly we only had six hours to go." She whispered,

She tried to get Danielle off of her but the major blood loss made her pass out and the speeding van veered off the highway down an embankment and crashed into a tree. The force of the crash sent Danielle flying through the window as Alana fell backwards hard against the dashboard. Several minutes later Alana came to and saw Este slumped over the steering wheel, she scrambled back onto the seat,

"No, no, no, ST no. ST. ST." Alana sobbed as she tried to pull the flap of ripped flesh back over the gaping wound to the side of Este's neck, "ST wake up, please wake up, we need you, I need you."

But Este had bleed out before the van had crashed into the tree. Growling outside brought Alana's attention back to her surroundings, suddenly she remembered Danielle, she climbed into the back, loaded the pump action shotgun and took a deep breath before sliding the side door open.

Outside the growling was much louder, Alana slowly walked towards the sound, she lowered the gun once she located her sister. Danielle thrown from the van at such a high speed had been impaled against a broken tree limb,  she continued to squirm as she tried to break free,  Alana crying walked up to her, as soon as Danielle saw her she reached out and tried to grab Alana's arms.

"I'm so sorry D, you kept me safe for so long but I couldn't do anything to save you. I love you Yelly with all my heart I love," Alana said.

She lifted the gun up against the side of Danielle's head and pulled the trigger, she turned and walked back to the van not allowing herself time to think, she opened the driver's door and kissed Este on the cheek,

"D didn't mean it ST, she'd never hurt you on purpose, she loves you, I love you Sissy." Alana said,

She repeated her actions and shot Este in the head. She hadn't been able to help her sister but at least she could stop her from turning into one of the zombies.

Alana looked in the back of the van and found a fold up shovel, she spent the next couple of hours digging one big grave, then with all her strength she managed to pull Danielle's impaled body from the tree and lowered her into the freshly dug grave, she struggled to drag Este from the van and over to the grave, but eventually she laid Este's body down next to Danielle.

Her energy spent Alana dropped to her knees and finally allowed herself to grieve the loss of her family, her Mom, Dad and now her two older sisters, the realization of knowing she was completely alone hit her in the chest like a freight train, the trees around her started to spin before everything went dark.

When Alana finally awoke her whole body felt stiff and cold and her left arm was throbbing, her brain took a few seconds to focus before she remembered where she was and what had happened, seeing her sister's bodies lying in the grave caused a fresh stream of tears to pour down her face.

The sky had begun to get dark as the sun slowly set, Alana knew she needed to finish burying her sisters before taking shelter in the van for the night, she picked up the shovel and started to throw dirt into the grave, but after a few shovels of dirt she had to stop from the pain, she looked at her left arm and suddenly felt sick to the stomach, her shirt was ripped and had blood all over it, Alana's worse fears were confirmed when she lifted the sleeve up and saw the bite mark on her arm. Danielle must have somehow bit her as she was trying to pull her off of Este.

In a complete daze Alana made her way back to the van and climbed inside, she sat down in the corner and pulled her legs up under her chin, she had never been alone before, her whole life she had been surrounded by her family, her Mom, Dad, her sisters, but now they were all gone, suddenly she grabbed Este's back pack and frantically searched through it until she found what she was looking for. Through blurry eyes she stared at the picture of her family all happy and smiling, seeing their happy faces calmed her thoughts long enough for her to realize what she needed to do.

Alana climbed out of the van and walked back down the hill, she slid down into the grave next to her sisters, holding the picture against her chest she lifted the gun up to her own head and whispered,

"I'll see you all soon."
