Alyx couldn't contain her excitement. She had built up the courage to give the cute girl who had just come in for an audition to play music here her phone number, and now just had to wait until she started to text her. Around thirty minutes later she felt her phone buzz. She saw a message light up on her phone. It read;
"Hey! It's Aya, from the coffee shop? Can't wait to work with you!"
Alyx felt heat on her face. She responded quickly.
"Yeah, can't wait to get to know you better! My dads run the place, so I've kinda lived there half my life."
She got a response almost immediately.
"Were they the ones holding the auditions? Also, don't worry about me being homophobic or whatever, I have two moms."
"Yeah, that's them!"
"I think my moms and your dads went to the same high school together? Funnily enough, they're in two separate worlds now. My moms run a fashion empire. If you've heard the company 'B&C', they're the entrepreneurs that started that."
'THE B&C company?!' Alyx thought to herself. More than half her wardrobe consisted of the brand, especially since the shorts they designed for women had enough space to fit something like a wallet in the pockets, and were priced the same as men's shorts.
"Tell your moms I personally thank them for making the most comfortable tshirts ever. Really did me a solid."
"I'll make sure to drop in a word lol."
Just as she was about to text back, she felt her phone buzz once more.
"Shit, gotta study for an World History test. See you tomorrow?"
She looked at her watch. She noticed that it was, in fact, Monday, and that Aya would be working the next day. She replied;
"Works for me. See you later!"
Both girls fell asleep with the other in their mind.
The next day, Alyx was in a world of her own. She kept singing different French love songs, only to be awoken from her daydream by Noah, her best friend.
"Who is it?" He asked, leaning over her desk.
"N-NO ONE!" she shouted, earning a few stares from nearby classmates. "Can't a girl just sing French love songs and not be interrogated by her best friend of..." she started to count the years on her fingers.
"Fifteen. Fifteen years," he added. "Our dads were best friends throughout college, they wanted to make sure that we spent every second of every day together. I got to live two weeks without knowing you," he paused. "Best two weeks of my life."
"Shut up," she laughed, giving him a friendly shove. "God knows where you would be if I hadn't come to save you that one time in second grade when that asshole Will Kropp tried to fight you and I squared up in your place."
"Back to the point," he said steering the conversation in a different direction, "Who is this mystery girl?"
"I never told you it was a girl!" She said, covering her mouth with her hands soon after. "Shit, forget I said that."
"I've known you your entire life. You don't think I would notice you were hella gay by now?"
By now, Alyx was flushing furiously, her face in her hands. "I-it's stupid, really."
Noah smiled. "Obviously not stupid enough to hide from your best friend forever."
Alyx thought to herself for a minute, then told him. "So I was working my shift at my dads' coffee shop, right? And you know, I was proud of myself for the day, having to make someone this shitty pink and yellow drink they claimed was off the 'secret menu'. And the arcade in the lounge was up and running, a couple kids here and there winning pac man or whatever-" She was cut off.
"Skip the bullshit and get to the part where you meet her."
"R-RIGHT! Right," she continued. "So this super cute bass guitarist comes in and she's probably, what, a year younger than us? She had this dark blue hair with some sky blue streaks that faded in and out everywhere, and she goes up and she's like 'look at all the college kids here they're so lifeless' and I was like 'yeah I know!' And then asked me where the auditions were for a music gig at the place and I was like 'oh go the orange door' and so she did! And then she comes out a few minutes later and is like 'I got the job!' And so then I gave her a free iced coffee but wrote my phone number on it!" She wailed the last sentence in the train wreck of run ons.
"She sounds pretty cute," Noah added. "Meanwhile I can't even get the head of the yearbook staff notice me. She's so amazing!"
"At least you have plenty of fish in the sea. Only 11% of the population is at least a little gay, meaning that she probably won't even bat an eye at me."
Noah comforted her. "Awe, come on, cheer up! You're too amazing to not notice, there's gotta be a way. We can like, make her gay or something. Bi, at the least."
"That's it then," she stood up and stood, almost triumphantly. "I am going to win over this girl and you," she pointed at Noah, "are going to be my wingman. You'll have to come to the Coffee Bean every single day and help me. Are you ready for that kind of commitment?" She flashed a smile at them.
Noah rolled his eyes. "As always."
The two went to the coffee shop together, Noah occasionally teasing Alyx about how head over heels she was for a girl she barely knew.
