Running through the jet was a chore for Ezra. He had succeeded in the mission to hijack the enemy plane, but he and his partner were injured. Unfortunatley his partner took a blow to the head, so he had his partner slung over his shoulders. He finally reached the cargo hold, but the enemy was closing in fast. Without thinking he set his partner gently on the floor of the cargo pod.
"I promise," he said to the still body, "I will find you. No matter what may happen to me."
He launched the pod, and saw it careen to the snow banks of the Arctic. He turned around and drew his gun, but was shot before he could do anything. He fell to his knees, and waited for the inevitable.
BZZZT, BZZZT, BZZZT.
Ezra's eyes flew open, he quickly drew his hand from beneath his pillow, which was holding a gun, and shot the object making the buzzing. He then turned his body to look at the time, but he saw that his alarm clock had a hole in it.
Ugh, he thought, blasted nightmare. And why is it always that same exact nightmare? Did my mind just run out of ideas to scare me awake?
For over six months, he had that same recurring nightmare. Running with his partner, getting that person to safety, getting shot, and, if his alarm clock didn't interfere, being whacked in the head with the butt of a gun.
He dressed into his uniform and set off to work. Driving down the boulevard, he marveled at the wonder that was the Triskelion. He drove past the gate and into the garage. He got into the elevator where he met a couple of familiar faces. One was male and the other female.
"Agent Bridger," said the male, "Welcome back."
"I didn't go anywhere," he replied.
"Don't mind him, Ezra," said the female, "He's in a really good mood today. Last night, we--"
"Listen," he interrupted, "Agent Skye, I don't care what you and Agent Ward were doing last night. I had a rough start today, and I don't feel like socializing."
They were silent for the rest of the ride up. Ezra exited on the floor where he worked. Skye muttered something to him, but he wasn't paying attention. He found his way to his computer, and logged in. He overheard on the news the extensive story about how another one was captured, and though it put up a fight, it was promptly dealt with. The name was heard and he searched it up, to cross it off of the list of known enemies to the order.
"Ezra," spoke a voice from behind, "don't you seem happy this morning."
He could recognize that voice anywhere. "Not exactly, sir. I had a rough start."
"The nightmares again?"
"I forget what your inhuman powers allow you to do, Maul." He turned around and saw the red and black man with small horns growing from his head.
"I will put in a word with the Madame on giving you a couple of weeks off. To recuperate, of course."
"Thank you, sir."
"Check your inbox when you can. You have a new mission of termination."
Ezra turned around and looked into his emails. Sure enough, there was indeed a piece which detailed who he was to kill next.
All of them are known enemies, he thought, and they're in hiding. Challenge accepted.
He sent the dosier to his phone, and headed to the break room. Once there he saw his close-ish friend, Wedge Antilles.
"Hey Ezra," he called to him.
"Hail Hydra," he replied.
Ezra's with HYDRA?!?! What happened? Who was his partner? WHY IS HE WITH HYDRA?!?!?!?!?
All this and more will be revealed in the coming chapters.
