The beast screeched again and beat its tail and wings wildly. Dodging the dragon, Hadden stumbled to her.
He grabbed her limp body and dashed out of the dragon's storm.

Arrows shot through the air and struck the tender spot Kala's sword had marked. Filled with rage the dragon shrieked and spewed fire in all directions. Hadden held Kala tightly and leapt onto a boulder. The cave glowed and flashed in chaos. Stumbling up the side ledge, Hadden made his way to the top of a towering rock. He laid Kala down with his shield.

She stirred.

Something made his heart falter. For a moment everything froze. Seeing her laying like a little child with his shield blanketing her made him want to stay with her forever.
He wanted to hold her face between his hands and whisper I love you.
He wanted to sweep her away from the troubled lives they lead.

He wanted to kiss her.
Oh how he wanted to kiss her.

Jerking himself away, he clenched his sword and held his breath. His heart thundered inside his chest.

"Beast!" he yelled. Kala's face swarmed his mind.

The dragon stopped and turned slowly towards him.

"Today," he held up his sword, "you d-i-i-i-i-e!"

Lurching forward the dragon screeched and its stomach glowed. Hadden threw himself into the air.

"HADDEN NO!" Kala screamed behind him.

But it was too late.

The dragon opened its mouth for the flames to escape. Hadden thrust his sword deep into the dragons throat. The beast shrieked a deafening blow and fire spewed out of his mouth. It whirled around and bat its wings.

Suddenly the whole dragon went up in flames. Alder grabbed Kala and rushed towards the mouth of the cave.
Fire spun around the room.
The dragon let out one last horrific shriek and it exploded in flames.
The blast thrust them out of the cave.

The three had now become the two – but the horror of Azûr was dead.
