Months passed and their love grew day by day. It was August. The weather had turned sunny. Summer was slightly humid. They both revelled in the sunshine.
At least once a day, Lone Wolf would take Kat down to the river, undressed her and swam 'til their bodies touched. Then there was no turning back.
One afternoon while they made love on the river bank, a light drizzle fell. Lone Wolf asked if she wanted to go home. Kat said no and clung to him.
By now they were one and each time they climaxed their eyes held.
Lone Wolf had built a compound for the horses. Kathryn successfully cultivated a vegetable garden. They had two cows and three goats. Lone Wolf would tease her because she adored the animals, he would often tell her if hunting became scarce they could eat Blossom or TwoTone- one a cow, the other her favourite goat. She would punch him, her hand hurt more than it hurt him. The first time he teased her she cried for hours. Lone Wolf tried to explain that he would never eat her pets and she punched him again.
"Savage Dog!" She would scream at him.
Lone Wolf still struggled to pronounce her name so he named her Skai, which meant sky due to the blue of her eyes. She loved her name. She loved him, her savage dog.
Kathryn had forgotten about Charles, Harry and Linn-Anne. She had a new life now. Lone Wolf taught her to hunt and that was a total disaster. Each time she killed a deer she would cry her heart out. He loved her for her crazed spirit, her strength, beauty but, above all else, for taming him.
They taught each other to love, laugh and that mistakes are fun as well. Lone Wolf's English improved and Kathryn understood many Navajo words which she could not pronounce. When she did the laughter in his eyes would infuriate her.
Providence produced his first offspring. Lone Wolf helped his Appaloosa, Wild Flower to birth a strong foal. He was as black as night with only one white spot in his flank.
"What shall we call him?" Kat asked through her tears.
Lone Wolf washed his hands and held her to his chest.
"We will call him Nàiidzeet. Dream in your language, my life with you is a dream come true."
Lone Wolf suddenly became ridged.
"What's wrong, Lone Wolf?"
"White men." He said in distaste.
"How do you know?"
"Their horses are shoed. Stay here. Listen to me, Skai. Stay and don't come out."
Lone Wolf grabbed his bow and arrows and and closed the stable door behind him. Kathryn sat next to Naiidzeet while Providence looked at the little thing, it was as if Providence knew that was his bloodline.
Kat thought maybe Lone Wolf was mistaken. After a few moments she heard the approaching horses and fear gripped her heart. Kathryn could recognise Lone Wolf's voice at anytime. She did not hear him speak. She did recognise Charles' voice. She stood transfixed, surprise and fear posed through her whole body.
How the hell did he find her?She looked at the foal, Providence and Wild Flower.
"No," She said and their ears twitched, "I shall not leave you or my husband."
She pulled herself erect and stepped into the sunlight.
"Where is my daughter, Heathen?" Boomed Charles' voice, he had not attempted to to dismount his horse. Sheriff Hicks and Harry of all people were next to Charles. Sheriff Hicks tipped his hat. Kat took her place next to Lone Wolf. Hicks spoke,
