As I thanked my driver nonchalantly, I was accustomed to seeing a large building tower over my vision, immersing into the grey skies of London. A wave of unfamiliarity washed over me as I took a step inside the gigantic building. As habitual it had become to walk inside my father's headquarters of business, the William Kensington never called me to his office during office hours.
I clutched my med-school acceptance letter in my hands as I ambled over to the front desk. A lady in her business casual dress stood up purposefully. She stuck her hand out at me with great passion, "Ms. Kensington, what a pleasure to meet you once again. Your father has been expecting you."
I smiled, "Why, thank you." I read a tag that was on her dress, "Amelia. Will my dad be up in his office right now?"
"Yes, miss."
I thanked her once again and went up the elevators. Of course, entering the building every time, I was greeted by each employee who stopped dead in their tracks hoping to impress me as if I were to pass a good word about them.
Key word: as if.
My father was a man of his word. I never fancied his stubbornness but he loved what he did being the chief executive officer of the leading biotechnology company in the world which designed and marketed prosthetics for people. With great demographic trends, this industry was expected to increase in popularity every year - only making it harder on ProsthoWorks, our company, of course.
As the elevator opened to the top floor, I paced to my father's office, not bothering to knock. "Ah, my dear! I'm extremely delighted to have you here. Have a seat here, darling." My father then looked at all of the other employees sitting in his meeting who perked up from their chair. "Those of you who haven't met my daughter, this is Sienna."
Everyone nodded, smiling at me. I smiled back pleasantly, taking a seat on my chair.
My father continued, "We have been discussing various tactics over the couple of months and are hoping to execute and release one of the finest prosthetics for arms. I know you are all the heads of the company; the reason we've been standing first in the industry is because of all of your hard work. But as you know, with my age, I want to pass down this legacy - over to my daughter who will be taking over for me in a month." He paused, looking over to me. Everyone's faces transformed into an appalled expression. "This has come as news, I know. But this is not an abrupt decision; it is one I have considered over many years."
The revelation was a shocking one; my dad wanted to hand his business down to me? Questions bombarded in my head as to why my father chose me or most importantly - what was I going to do about my med school acceptance letter?
Before I could say anything, however, he continued. "I know it has come as a surprise, but I want to do what's best for my family. After the passing of my wife, Rosaline, I've put my blood, sweat and tears into this. And I want my daughter to reap the seeds I have sown."
