Evie didn't know whether she felt more disgust or weary as she studied her surroundings after her first few steps into the school. Nothing was well kept; the walls looked as though they had been slowly chipped away, the lockers were covered in graffiti, and the doors hung off their hinges as if they had been broken into several times. Well, this is definitely different. It wasn't like she hadn't seen the Isle streets, but even those were better than the inside of its school, and part of her wished her mother hadn't gotten tired of extorting someone into home-schooling her.
She swiftly moved away from everyone she saw, all of them watching her with a glint in their eyes that she never wanted to see again, the looks she received making her feel in danger after only seconds of being in the school. Several crude comments were thrown in her direction, but still she walked with her spine perfectly straight and her head held high; there was no way any of these guys were going to get her on her back.
"New girl, huh?"
Evie was ready to smash her hand into anyone who touched her, however, nothing came into contact with her, so she turned around to face the owner of the voice. His dark-brown hair hung long and loose passed his shoulders, the top obscured by a red beanie, and his nearly-black eyes appeared kind and childish despite the mischievous glint present inside them; he wore a colorful leather vest that Evie felt could use lots of work, and blue leather pants with a zipper across the knee; the glove on his left hand covered to his fingertips while the one on his right revealed his long fingers.
"And you are?" Evie questioned suspiciously, wondering why this boy had chosen to speak to her.
"The name's Jay," the boy answered, dropping into a slight bow and extending his hand.
She didn't take it. "Evie."
Jay stood back up, one corner of his mouth curved into a smirk. A specific smirk that she actually enjoyed flashed before her eyes in that moment, and she found herself smiling at the memory of the girl she had ran into a week ago, her hand moving without instruction to brush over her neck where the marks had finally faded. She hadn't thought about her adventure with the purple-haired girl much since it had happened, only once in a while remembering the night fondly. Despite how much she had enjoyed herself, she knew she would never stay with a girl, her entire focus in life being to find a prince with a mother-in-law's wing.
"So, what's a beautiful girl like you doing in a place like this?" Jay asked, not even caring to hide the fact that he was running his eyes over her body.
Not a chance. "This is the only school on the Isle, isn't it?"
"Then why haven't you attended until now?"
"I was home-schooled," Evie answered honestly, but bluntly.
"And now…" Jay trailed off, expecting her to finish.
"I'm not being home-schooled," Evie stated the obvious, not giving the boy any more information about her life.
Jay chuckled. "I like your attitude. If you let me, I'll show you the ropes of this school."
Evie merely arched her eyebrow in response.
"You know, who to mess with, who not to, those kinds of things," Jay explained, crossing his arms across his chest. "Unless you want to figure those things out on your own, but I suggest wearing more protective clothing than that if that's your plan."
Evie wasn't sure about befriending Jay, but she also knew it wasn't intelligent to venture around the school without knowing how things worked, so she met the boy's gaze. "Okay, Jay. Show me the ropes."
"Come on," Jay gestured behind him with his head. "Let's get you to class while we talk. What's your first period?"
"Physics, I think," Evie answered after glancing at her poorly written schedule, the incorrect spelling of the word seeming like it was meant to be 'physics'.
