Petra's POV
I grabbed the last item Evie and Tay had given me to try on. Usually, I hated trying on a million outfits and talking 'fashion' all the time. But since Cotillion was coming up, Tay had convinced me to change up my style because of all the cameras that would be around campus. So, her and Evie took it upon themselves to go find me some new clothes to replace my normal ensemble. Because apparently, as Evie so delicately put it, 'time may stand still in Neverland, but style still moves on and it left me in the dust'.
I put the black hat on my head and hesitated for a moment. The last time I wore a hat was several months ago at home when my dad let me wear his, and he'd let me wear it ever since I was little. My mother always said that she couldn't even touch his hat, that I must have been pretty special to be able to even hold it. I missed Neverland and London, but I was never able to be myself there. I was in Auradon now, I could finally be me. I had once confessed this to Carlos, my boyfriend, and he said him and his friends felt the same way about the Isle of The Lost where they grew up. Maybe that factored into our attraction for each other, our upbringings. But I suppose I'll never truly know.
A soft knocking could be heard on the bathroom door. "You done in there?" I heard Tay yell from outside. I sighed and straightened out my shirt, walking to the door. "Yeah, yeah. Don't get your panties in a twist." I replied.
I opened the door to reveal myself to Tay and Evie. They both sat on my old roommate's bed and looked at me in shock. I looked down at the clothes, immediately thinking there was something wrong. "What? Did I put the shirt on backwards again?" I said, checking myself in the mirror in the corner of the room. Evie shook her head and stood next to me. "No! Petra, you look amazing!" She exclaimed, tugging on my flannel. "The color looks great on you, it brings out your eyes so well! You look gorgeous."I turned to her and raised an eyebrow behind my rounded sunglasses. "What, was I horrendously ugly before?" I asked, to which Evie shook her head quickly. "Oh my Walt, no! That's not what I meant!" She said, smiling. "Petra, you really do look great." I laughed and took off the sunglasses to clearly see my friends. "Thank you, Evie." I said. "You know I was just messing with you right?" Evie nodded and moved her hair out of her face. "Oh, of course. I'm best friends with Mal, I'm used to blunt humor."
Tay flew onto my shoulder and sat down. "Who knew shopping for someone else could be so much fun!" She said, though I was the only one that could understand her. I translated to Evie and she sighed. "Finally someone else gets it!" She said. "You should come help me design my dresses sometime-" Evie paused and gasped, grabbing her purse. "Mal's dress! I'm almost out of time to finish it!" She said in alarm, running towards the door. She put her hand on the doorknob and stopped. "Um, I'll see you guys later." She said politely, then bolted out of the room.
Tay and I didn't move for a second, still in shock by the rapid change of events. Finally, Tay spoke up. "So, that happened." She said, flying off my shoulder and to her small bedroom she made for herself when we first got to Auradon. I scoffed and nodded, grabbing my bag from near the door. "Yeah, but she's not the only one in a hurry." I said, picking up my sunglasses and putting them back on. "I promised Carlos I would meet him at Fencing today." Tay sighed and crossed her arms. "I don't see why you don't join the Fencing team." She said. "You literally grew up with a sword in your hand, why don't you put it to good use?"
I rolled my eyes and put my hand on the door knob. "Because I don't need to fence for sport. There's no point." I argued. "If I wanted to kick Chad's butt, I don't need to be on the fencing team to do so." Tay groaned and laid on her tiny bed. "You're ridiculous!" She shouted. I smirked and opened the door. "I'll miss you too!" I said as I walked out and shut the door behind me.
Since the campus would be so crowded with reporters, Fairy Godmother had asked me not to fly out in the open so as to not draw more attention to myself and therefore interrupt class. Apparently letting Neverland kids into Auradon Prep was a bigger thing then I had originally thought, but Fairy Godmother didn't let any reporters in back then. But now that their roaming campus it's completely possible that the story could get picked back up. And I really don't want to be in the lime light all the time like Ben and Mal.
When I arrived in the fencing arena, I stood up in the balcony with the headmaster's daughter Jane along with a few other girls. Carlos sat below us with his beloved dog Dude. They were all fixed on this one person who was fighting everyone in the ring, but their face was covered. "Who is that?" I asked Jane. She glanced over at me and shrugged. "No idea, but their crazy good right?" I nodded as I watched the mysterious fighter fence with the captain of the team, Jay, one of the best fencers I knew. Besides myself, of course. Their moves were absolutely flawless, and they never broke their form. It didn't take long for the fighter to knock Jay's sword out of his hand, winning the fight. The whole arena cheered for the mysterious fighter, but when they took off their mask everyone went silent.
"It's Lonnie!" Jane said in shock. I had to admit, I was surprised too. I had crossed paths with the daughter of Mulan before, she never seemed the fighting type. Of course knowing her mother's history it made sense for the skill to run in the family.
"See? I'm just as good as the rest of you!" Lonnie said. "Jay, let me join the team." Jay smiled, clearly agreeing. But of course, Chad came along and ruined it. "Mm, that can't happen!" He said, searching his pockets for something. Finally he pulled out a small handbook of sort and began flipping through it. "Ah ha!" He said, stopping on one of the pages and turning it so the whole arena could read it. "Says right here. 'A team shall be comprised of a captain and 8 men'." Lonnie rolled her eyes and turned back to Jay. "But you're down one man since Ben had to quit and attend to his kingly duties!" She argued. Jay shrugged and crossed his arms. "Sorry Lonnie, I really don't want to let coach down."
Lonnie huffed and grabbed her things. "If my mother thought like that, she would've lost the war." She spat, then walked out without another word as Chad continued to boast about his stupid rule book.
Soon the arena had cleared out, leaving Carlos and Dude still in the ring. "Ready to go, puppy boy?" I called from the balcony. Carlos snapped his head up and smiled. "Petra! How long have you been here?" He replied, grabbing his things. I floated down from the balcony and landed next to him. "Long enough." I said. "That's not fair, you know. Lonnie should be able to join the team, she's really good." Carlos nodded as we both started walking out of the arena. "Yeah, but the rule book says-" I cut him off with a groan of annoyance. "If we went by some 'rule book', we probably wouldn't even be together!" I said. "If you'd remember, the only people aloud to fly around here are Tay and I. And you've definitely joined me on a few trips in the sky."
Carlos shrugged as he held the exit door open for me. "There's nothing we can do anyways." He replied. "But knowing Jay I'm sure he'll find a loophole." I snickered and walked out the door with Dude trotting along behind me. "That's very true." I agreed. "That boy could get away with murder. Now what adventures do you have planned for us today, Mr DeVil?"
Apparently Carlos 'adventure of the day' was meeting Mal at his dorm room so she could give him a magic gummy that makes you tell the truth. Not exactly the adventure I had in mind, but whatever. When I asked why he needed it, he replied that it would help him with an invention he was working on. A little known fact about puppy boy here is that growing up apparently he worked a lot with technology, and he's been trying to get back into it. He's already upgraded the 3D printer in his room to make it faster then anyone else's, but he hadn't told me what he was working on now.
While we waited for Mal, Carlos and I sat on his bed and he helped me with my new cellphone while Dude sat in his dog bed near us watching the Tv. Growing up in Neverland I never needed a phone, but now they're essential to keep in touch with people. "So by pressing these buttons with letters on them, I can send messages to people who also have cellphones?" I asked, pushing the small buttons to try to get used to it. "Pretty much, it's called 'texting'." He explained. "You can call people too, but nobody does that anymore."
Suddenly, Mal burst into the room and pressed herself against the wall completely out of breath. Carlos and I looked up at her, a bit alarmed by her sudden entrance. Neither of us said anything as Mal began to pace back and forth in front of us. She glanced at the Tv and saw the same story that had been playing all day; her and Ben dining with Aladdin and Jasmine. She grabbed the remote and shut is off when all of a sudden, she froze and her eyes turned a bright green that I'd never seen before. "Woah, easy girl." I said, setting the cell phone aside. Mal began to walk towards me and threw her hands in the air. "You think this is easy?" She cried. "You don't have a camera in your face every time you open your mouth to say boo!"
Carlos and I went silent again, once again confused. Mal sighed. "Not that I would need to say boo, I just-" she stopped herself and shook her head. Carlos shrugged. "Sorry." He simply said. I slapped him lightly on the arm, giving him a look that read 'be more understanding'. Mal quickly changed the subject. "Carlos, don't you ever miss screaming at people and making them run away from you?"
Carlos glanced over at me and sat up taller. "You're thinking of my mother, and I was usually on the other end of that. So, no. Not really." I smiled at Carlos, though he didn't see me since he was still looking at his distressed friend. I ruffled his hair and when he glanced over at me I pecked him on the lips. Carlos hardly ever mentioned his childhood on the Isle, but when he did it was extremely brief. It wasn't exactly a fond subject, so I tried not to bring it up.
After another moment of silence, Carlos stood up in front of Mal. "Oh, did you get it?" He asked excitedly. Mal nodded and dug through her bag for a moment. While she searched she glanced up at me. "Nice outfit, by the way." She commented. I comical tipped my hat at her as a way to say 'thank you'.
Just as Mal was about to pull the gummy from her purse, someone else entered the room unexpectedly. "Might as well invite the whole school at this point." I muttered, sitting up to see who had arrived. But when I saw who it was, I almost couldn't find the words to say. Our guest was none other then Chad Charming, the boy that had attempted to blackmail me for ditching him in the middle of a date 5 months ago. Since then, we had gotten along a bit better. He had moved on pretty quickly, as expected, to Audrey. Sure, she had dumped him as well. But Chad was still absolutely infatuated with her. Better her then me though, right?
Chad shut the door behind him and threw the key he used up in the air and caught it, a celebration of sorts. My guess was that he hadn't noticed we were here yet. Carlos and Mal were still trying to figure out what he was doing, but I was getting pretty impatient. "Chad!" I said, causing the blonde to jump in surprise and look at the three of us.
"Oh! Um, hi." He said, continuing to walk towards Carlos' table that held most of his inventions on it. "I just need to use the 3D printer here, it'll only be a second-" "How'd you get a key to my room?" Carlos cut him off. Chad looked down at the key in his hand and his eyes widened, acting like he had never seen it before. "Um, I made it the last time I was here." He explained. I looked over at Carlos and raised an eyebrow at him. He had let Chad sneak in his room before? When Chad saw the confused looks on our faces, he allowed himself to explain. "You were asleep." He said. "Look, your printer just works so much better then mine, and you installed all these hacks-" "Out." I said, pointing to the door.
Chad sighed in defeat and began walking to the door. "Chad!" Carlos called, in which the boy turned back to face us. "Leave the key." Chad rolled his eyes and set the key on the table near the printer. Then he left, slamming the door behind him.
Once we were sure Chad was gone, Mal pulled out a small, red gummy from her purse and held it out to Carlos. "This is it?" He asked again, eyeing the candy as if it was some ancient artifact. Mal nodded. "Yep, it's truth gummy." She assured him. "But, are you sure you want it? Because once you take this you'll tell the truth all the time and I know if I took this right now I would get sent back to the Isle so-" "Mal, relax. I'm not going to be eating it." He said, trying to calm her down. "I'm using it for a machine I'm working on-"
All of a sudden, Dude jumped out from his small doggy bed before I could catch him. It only took me a second to realize exactly what he was doing. "Dude, no!" I exclaimed, but it was too late. Dude had eaten the gummy right out of Mal's hand in one gulp. All three of us watched him climb back in his bed, waiting to see the gummy's effects.
At first, nothing happened. "Well, maybe they only work on humans-" "Ugh! That thing was awful!" I snapped my head to look at Dude. Did I really hear what I think I heard? Due to the look on Mal and Carlos' faces I could tell I wasn't the only one. Dude had just talked. "Hey, buddy?" Dude said to Carlos. "Would you mind scratching my butt?"
My eyes widened at the dog's request. "You heard him." Mal said in a flat tone. "Scratch his butt." Then she left without another word, leaving Carlos and I to deal with our newest dilemma.
"Oh come on, you scratch your own all the time!" Dude said, wagging his tail at Carlos. I cringed and stood up, trying to get that mental image out of my head. "And this is where I take my leave." I said, grabbing my bag and heading towards the door. Carlos furrowed his eyebrows at me and pointed to the dog. "You're just going to leave me alone with him?" He said, glancing at Dude then back at me. I stopped and looked back at him, pretending to think about it. "Your gummy, your dog, your problem." I finally said, then left the dorm room to let Carlos and Dude have a chat.
As I walked down the hall of the boy's dormitory to get back to my own room, I wasn't expecting to make any stops along the way. But I was proven wrong when I felt a hand grab my wrist and pull me inside one of the boy's dorms.
I had my hands balled into fist, ready to fight my captor, but found no need when I got a good look at the room. It was absolutely filthy with clothes strung everywhere and unfinished papers lying around. There was only one room I knew that was this messy, and that was the lost boys'. It only took a moment's glance to see the person that grabbed me was Slightly, the cockiest boy I knew. However at this moment, his ignorant nature was gone and filled with absolute fear. "What are you doing? They're going to spot us!"
Now I was filled with fear. "What? Who?" I exclaimed. My thoughts immediately went to Foxglove, my former roommate and friend that vowed revenge on me after I shut down her attempts to blackmail me for not letting her in on the details of my relationship. But before Slightly could answer, Nibs pushed him away from me. "You knucklehead, you're going to scare her!" He snapped, crossing his arms. Slightly put his hands on his hips, eyes widened. "She should be! They're everywhere!" He said.
Ever since my whole incident with Cubby, their has been 5 lost boys left in the dorm. Nibs, Slightly, Screw and Nails, and Toodles. I had never seen them all so shaken up by anything before. Even Toodles was freaking out, and he's usually the calm one of the group. I put my hands out and told everyone to calm down. "What is going on!" I yelled.
Nibs sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "One of the cameramen outside saw the twins and wanted an interview. You know, since they're from Neverland and all. But then one guy turned into two guys and eventually-" "Oh, Walt." I cursed, already knowing where this was going. "Don't tell me the paparazzi are trailing us now too." Nibs pursed his lips and raised his eyebrows. "Fine, I won't." He said. "But I'm sure you'll run into them if you're not careful."
I groaned and pushed my sunglasses up my face. "You know how hard I've been working to keep these guys off our backs?" I was about to give the boys a piece of my mind about this whole thing, but I knew it wasn't worth it. I took a deep breath to calm myself down. "Just, try to lay low. Alright?" I said, backing towards the door to continue my trip. The lost boys looked among themselves, all nodding and agreeing. "Good." I sighed. "And if they give you any trouble, you know where to find me." I winked at the boys and smirked before walking out of the room.
Thankfully, the rest of my walk was uninterrupted. So I made it back to my dorm in a matter of minutes. Inside I expected to see Tay flitting around the room like usual, but she seemed to be missing. I walked towards her tiny bedroom in the corner and saw a small, almost microscopic piece of paper on her bed. I picked it up carefully, the writing was so small I could barely read it. But there wasn't much there. The note said;Petra,
Evie is fitting me for my dress for Cotillion. She said she could fit me in early, so I left as soon as I could.
Sorry I didn't tell you,
Taylor BellI shrugged and threw the paper in the trash, laying onto my bed with the quilt my mother made me. I set my hat, bag, and sunglasses on my nightstand and shut my eyes. After Dude beginning to talk and paparazzi chasing the lost boys, I needed a few minutes to simply relax.
However, the world wasn't generous enough to give me that. Because the second I was about to doze off to take a well deserved nap, someone started profusely knocking on my door. I groaned in frustration and got up to answer the door, expecting Tay or Nibs. "What now?" I said, without even looking to see who it was first. But once I registered who it was I felt awful. "Oh, Mal. It's you, I'm so sorry-" but she cut me off.
"Petra, is it true that pixie dust is strong enough to break through the barrier around the Isle of the Lost?"
