I wrote this story a while ago. Before I wrote "We Are A Family", a story I plan to publish some time later on. Anyways, I was just trying out a different writing style. This one isn't my favorite and I'll probably continue to write the way the rest of my stories are written, but here's a little something. I'm hoping that this while encourage some of my favorite writers on here to feel the need to write another chapter. Also this is a conversion of another story I wrote and I've just decided to make it Norminah so there's G!P Normani.
Dinah Jane is standing in the middle of the aisle in the supermarket like a deer caught in headlights. This was not suppose to happen. No this was not how he was supposed to find out. Hell, if it was up to her she would have left the earth leaving her as a thing of the past. She never told her, never hinted at the fact that she might've been at the time, but by the way she's looking at her right now and the little girl behind her that's clinging to her legs like a second skin Dinah could tell she knew: the little girl belongs to her, to them. So the question remains, who? Who told her the one secret Dinah's kept hidden. The look on the brunette's face resembles pain and hurt and Dinah is well aware that she feels betrayed. Any real parent would. She left her out of it all. She was so scared when she found out she was pregnant 5 years ago, scared of what she might say, that she might leave her and their baby so much so that she took the opportunity away from her. She broke her heart into a million pieces when broke up with her. Never told her why either, never provided an explanation of any sort. She woke up one up one morning and Dinah, along with all of her things that accumulated at the brunette's place over time were gone. There was only a note in the space where she used to lay. Thinking about it now, she feels really bad. It was a shitty move but she knows she can't dwell on that right now. She's looking back and forth between Dinah's eyes and their creation and she's asking so many questions without saying anything at all. Dinah turns her attention back to her daughter who had only recently begun tugging lightly on her shirt trying to get her attention.
"Mommy, are we done yet? I wanna go home." she whines rubbing her eyes and Dinah knows that her daughter is becoming restless. She hasn't had her nap yet.
"Yes sweetie. We're almost finished okay, mommy just has to get a few more things and we'll leave. That sound good tama'ita'i?" Jocelynn nods and Dinah bends to pick her up resting her on her hip planting a kiss on her forehead while the little girl wraps her arms and legs around her mother's neck and waist.
"Let me help you." Normani breaks out of her trance long enough to watch her interact with the little girl, abandons her own cart and moves to grab ahold of the one that Dinah was pushing and pushes it around while the mother-daughter duo picks up the last of the things on their list and they head for the register. She pays for Dinah's groceries and walks the cart out to her car and loads up the trunk while Dinah straps Jocelynn in the booster seat in the back.
"You didn't have to." Dinah's voice is soft as she leans against the car door she doesn't look at him for a while.
"There's a lot of things either of us didn't have to do." Normani's voice is barely audible but Dinah hears her.
"Thank you."
Normani nods and there's an awkward silence before she speaks again.
"So she's mine? Like for real?" she asks looking at the little girl inside the car through the back window. The answer is obvious. She looks like her. She has Dinah's almond shaped, warm brown eyes, but she has Normani's ears and her complexion. She can't help but wonder what other similarities they share but right now she wants to hear Dinah to say it. She needs the confirmation. Normani looks at Dinah long and hard and she can tell she's struggling to answer. Dinah doesn't say anything though, she just nods her head.
"Were you ever gonna tell me?" the expression on her face changes and Normani immediately knows that answer as well. Dinah had no intentions on telling her. Ever. So she snaps.
"What the hell Dinah? You get pregnant, have my kid and don't tell me anything. What kind of bullshit is that?" Normani's pissed. Beyond pissed, she's livid, that much is obvious, but she's starting to feel bad, because even though she has every right to be she can see the tears fill her eyes as they roll down her cheeks and she can hear her. Dinah's crying.
"Why didn't you tell me?" she huffs and it's the first time Dinah''s spoken to Normani since she thanked her.
"Because, I just-I don't know. I guess I didn't want to be a burden. So I moved around, changed my number and cut off all contact with you. I made everyone, including Ally and Lauren, promise not to tell you where I was if you ever went looking. Hell, I even made Camila swear not to tell the few times we ran into each other."
"You know it wasn't your decision to make right."
"But it was. She's my daughter. I make all of my decisions and hers okay. Every last one."
"Still, having my baby and not telling me is fucked up, Dinah. What part of any of it made you think it was okay?"
"If you're just gonna yell and bad mouth me then I'm out of here." Dinah sniffled wiping away the tears that are still falling from her eyes and moves to open the door, but Normani grabs her arm.
"No, I'm sorry okay. But what do you want me to do. You have this whomever out here playing mommy or daddy to my daughter. Did you not think I would be a good mother or something? Or did the idea of raising a child in a same sex household scare you?" Normani's feelings are really hurt. She'd promised herself that she'd be a better woman and parent and the fact that she missed out on the early stages combined with the thought that she might completely miss out on this chance, hurt her.
"That's not it. I think you'd make a great mother someday. And she doesn't call him 'daddy'"
"Then what is it? I'm trying to understand and I just don't. Do you love him, Dinah?"
"I care about him, a lot."
"But do you love him?"
"I don't have to answer you."
"Oh, I think you do. You owe me that much."
"He's good for me, Normani."
"And I wasn't."
"He makes me happy."
"And sleeping in till noon makes me happy, but you don't see my gushing over whoever let's me do so."
She sighed. He's making this hard on her, harder than it has to be.
"Do you still love me?"
"Normani, I- please-"
"Just say that you don't love me. Say that you don't want to be with me and that you want nothing to do with me. If you can say it, I'll leave you alone for good."
"I hate you." Dinah lies not looking into her eyes as she hopes Normani believes her but she doesn't.
"No, you don't. Look at me and say you don't still love me. And mean it." Normani traps Dinah between his body and her car door.
"I have to go, it's time for her nap." Dinah whispers looking everywhere but back at Normani.
"Let me be there. Let me be a mother to my daughter." she pleads forcing Dinah to look in her eyes. Normani stares into Dinah's warm brown eyes and slowly leans in pressing a kiss to the corner of her lips and is pleased when she reciprocates.
She's the first to pull away and her eyes flutter open. Warm brown eyes bore into dark brown ones and Dinah gently moved her fingers to her lips. She missed feeling Normani's against her own.
"Okay."
"Okay?"
"We will try this out. Don't make me regret it."
"Wouldn't dream of it."
