Chapter 1: winding back

“Camaraderie and Solidarity”

Everything was supposed to work this way, the two kings, Dinous and Zeriakius vowed to each other never to hurt one another. But it was this woman who broke the bonds between the two brothers.  It was a withdrawn marriage between the sea nymph Daphne and Zeriakius.

The bride was stolen by Dinous, he asked helped from the most powerful sorcerer Izmo. However it was against the rule of magic to cast a spell for love, but Izmo was willing to break the rules if Dinous would be willing to pay the price.

He insisted that he’d pay everything he has to get the woman he wants. Having heard Dinous statement, Izmo grinned and snapped his fingers. But he warned Dinous. “Every spell comes with a consequence it is inevitable and every spell comes with an antidote.”

Dinous never paid attention to his warnings. He was just interested in getting his girl.

And so it was done.

It was the night before the wedding that he came to see Daphne. Everything happened as planned, he entered the room of Daphne, and she ran to him. They starred at each other. Then suddenly she grabbed him and she threw her arms around him. Her lips glided softly with his. He pulled her toward him and kissed her back.

The door opened, it was Zeriakius.

“What are you doing here?” he cried out.

“I don’t want you. It is he who I love not you.” Daphne replied as she held herself closer to Dinous who was holding her. And she grasp for another long lingering kiss.

Zeriakius stood hopeless as he watched them. He got so furious that he pulled them both outside of the room and called out to his soldiers to send them away from his castle.

Certainly there was no wedding the next day.

He never wanted to see his brother. He hated everyone. The chamberlains could not make him go out. He skipped his meals. He fell so hard. Everyone in the palace felt miserable too.

No longer was he smiling, nor telling jokes. He turned ill-tempered and judgmental. He hated women.

His mother, who was worried sick that he would lose his mind completely, sent in Seraphine. She thought that she could help her son with a couple of incantations to let him forget about that awful incident.

Seraphine arrived with her sister Dexene. They came to see Zeriakius immediately. And there he was, wearing sharp, piercing eyes, gawking at their movements as they came to talk to him.

There was something in Dexene that made him feel more uncomfortable. She was staring at him, like as if she wanted to say something; her eyes looked as if she’s asking a lot of questions, wondering what lies behind his awful face.

“Why are you looking at me?”

“I’m just amazed in seeing you, your highness”

“And why is that?”

“I know how you feel, but you do not deserve it.”

Seraphine pulled her away.

He fell silent, almost about to cry.

Dexene was a gifted child.  She can see through people’s eyes, she can read what lurked in the minds of men.  Her blue eyes were always enticing, people were driven by her. She was poker-faced that no one could tell what she felt, but this makes everyone look into her deeply, for her way of talking always soothed those in pain and her sweet nature makes good company to those who are in need of one. Never in his life did someone make him pity himself  and for that, he felt annoyed by her presence.
