"Thank you for coming, have a nice day!" I called out to the couple that had just exited the door.
I sighed and placed the tip given to me on my box. $135.75 dollars, and still counting. The dangling of bells announces new costumers so I kept my money and looked up with the brightest smile I could muster.
I walked up to their table with my notepad and pen seeing they already had in mind their orders, "Hello, what can I get you in this fine afternoon?"
"Just coffee and a bagel for me, and water and chocolate chip for my son" the woman smiled warmly and put down the menu
I wrote their orders down and grabbed their menu walking back to the counter. "Mommy I wanted a soda! Why did you get me water?" the little boy whined
"You've had enough soda young man, now keep your voice down you'll disturb others"
"Hey Kate, sorry I'm late. I was held up by David" my co worker Jane said to me. I playfully rolled my eyes at her knowing she went back with her on and off boyfriend, David. One day they're together, the next they're done and the cycle just keeps on going back again.
"Jane I don't know why you put up with him, he's a jackass and we both know it" I told her as a matter of fact and gave her the orders to prepare
"I know, I know. But I love him." She sighed, this is why I love Jane. She won't care if you don't do good to her, she'll still be there for you. No matter what.
"Someday Jane, the right man will be there for you and he'll care for you the same way you care for him" I sighed thinking about when will my man magically show up and get me away from this disaster
"Once the Westwood brothers see me, that'll be it. The beginning of my life" She sighed dreamily thinking about the Princes of Windston. Charles Westwood and Andrew Westwood, Christ saying their name made me want to laugh.
I never fancied or thought so highly of the royals, do they even care for their people or just enjoy their social life? The crime rate is so high that no one dares to step a foot outside their house at 5 pm.
"This is why you and my sister get a long so well" I laughed thinking about my sister. She's all royal here royal there. She praises the royals. But of course I'd tell her to quit it. She even has a poster of the royal family on her wall, she kisses it goodnight before she sleeps.
"Well this is why I think your sister is more entertaining than you are" she retorted giving me the orders
I fake gasped and walked over to the table of the costumers earlier. "Coffee, bagel, water and chocolate chips. Anything else?" She shook her head no. I walked back to my place after telling them to enjoy.
Once everyone was out, we started cleaning up the cafe and began closing the blinds. Making sure everything was secured, it was already 4:30.
"I'll see you tomorrow Jane, stay safe and behave" I said after hugging her. I watched as she walked towards the other side of the rode, once I made sure she was safe I began walking home.
Usually everyone would be walking back their homes by 4, but when it was past 4:20 to be exact it was a ghost town. Although there would be a few other people, just those who were brave enough.
"Where do you think you're going huh?" I heard a voice say, I tried looking but there was too much fog
"No let go of me!" I heard muffled voices of a young girl, poor her. Also no one helps anyone when they were in trouble in this kind of time, that's a suicide mission. As much as I wanted to help her, I couldn't. I'd die and no one would be able to provide for my family, I'm their only hope.
The girl screamed before I heard a gun shot, and just like that. She's dead. This is why I hated the government, the royals and anyone who was in a high position. Did they see what was happening? Or did they just not care?
I began running towards my house, nothing that I was used to but just to be safe. I sighed once I arrived in the old and withered apartment. It was all I can afford, $70 a month. I can barely get $500 a month and I have electricity and food to pay for.
My sister can't even go to school because of this, my mom is sick and my father died when I was only 10. I pushed the thought away before I ended up crying, for years I was so depressed when I lost my father, we were all sad but my mom was the one affected the most. So I decided I had to be the one taking care of her and my sister who was only 1.
I twisted the rusty door knob open to see my sister propped down on the floor watching the Windston News talking about the royal and rich people. I scoffed, aren't they supposed to news the crime that's happening everywhere and not their glamorous life?
"Liz, were you watching tv all day?" I asked in a warning tone making my way to hear and kissed her head. She squealed when she felt my presence then hugged me.
"Yes! Yes I did! Tomorrow is the day!" She said excitedly jumping up and down. She's the only one that brings this room to life, I'm lucky to have someone like her.
"Tomorrow's what?" I asked her walking over to the kitchen and prepare food. We only had three pieces of fish left and water, fits us for the night. I'll have to go to the market tomorrow.
"They'll announce the winners tomorrow! I can't wait!" She beamed. Oh right, that. It's the royal's contest, it's called Search for the Princess. They pick 7 girls from ages 18-22 randomly. Last time that happened my parents were still a couple and King Alexander did the search, he fell in love with Queen Patricia since then.
"I bet you'll be chosen" I teased while cooking the fish. She twirled away to hear room probably getting her 'Royal Magazine', it was her bible. She read it again and again even though she memorized it. Sometimes she'd read it to me too, sometimes I'd listen and sometimes I'll tune out.
"Hi darling" my mom said from behind me. I greeted her and kissed her cheek. Her eyes were so tired and immediately I felt bad, I've been applying for more jobs so I can do 2, by having 2 jobs I'd be able to get mom to the hospital or even send Liz to school but none of them would accept me.
"Oh! We're running out of food!" My mom said when she opened the fridge. She began shaking her head and reaching for her wallet but I stopped her.
"It's okay mom, I got it. I'll go to the market tomorrow. Don't worry" I assured her. Suddenly her eyes became watery. Oh mom. I hugged her and rubbed her back.
"Honey I'm so sorry" she sobbed. I kept on telling her it was okay. Once she stopped I let go of her and gave her water to drink.
"I'm so lucky to have a daughter like you. Your father would've been proud." She kissed my forehead and I called Liz so we can all gather and say grace before eating.
