Chapter 4
Daryl's POV
We salvaged anything we could from the house before taking off on the road.
"So, what about you Jennifer? What was your life like before all this happened?"
"Well my mom had Murphy 28 years after I was born, after she met my stepdad, Henry. My real dad left me when I was young. But you know, I was just a normal person who played sports, went shopping, watched TV, and other normal things." I chuckled a little bit, remembering what life was like before. "Anyway, one night Henry, woke us up and told us something wasn't right. He didn't really explain but he was gone for days and he never came back. Then I realized what had happened, you know, all of this. Today was Murphy's birthday so I went out to get things to surprise her..." I could see tears swelling in her eyes. " When I came back, they were dead; then I met you"
By now she was full on crying. I felt bad for her, I knew how she felt. I inched closer to her and put my arm around her shoulder, pulling her into me. " Shhh..... it's ok, we've all been there, let it out." I walked with her like that for a few minutes. Suddenly there was ruffling coming from the bushes. "Be quiet." I reached for my crossbow over my shoulder. I patiently waited for what was about to come out. Shocked, ravens flew out of the bush, knocking me on the ground. Jennifer started laughing. "Oh you think that's funny, huh?" laughing, bringing myself to my feet and coming to my senses. "Pretty much." she responded. "Whatever"
We walked further down the road. It was getting really dark, and we needed somewhere safe to stay the night. "Hey, let's start looking for somewhere for the night." I pointed out a neighborhood just coming into view.
Jennifer's POV
We stepped on to the porch of a light blue house, knocking on the door to see if anything was occupying the house already. No walkers (Daryl calls the geeks that) came to the door. Daryl turned the knob, only to find that it was locked. He took his crossbow and broke open a window next to the door. " Wait here, I'll clear out the house, make sure there ain't anything in there." I obeyed him and sat down in a rotting rocking chair on the porch. AAAHHHHHHH!!! I heard Daryl scream. I crawled through the window and ran through the house, finally finding him in the kitchen.
"WHAT? WHAT HAPPENED!!!" running up to him. "Look at all this food!" he said excitingly. I looked up to see a cabinet filled with food. "Seriously? That's what you screamed about! I though you were bit! Not funny." I punched him softy in the shoulder and he chuckled. "Sorry." We sat down and ate. I went back to the kitchen to see if there was anything else to eat.
"No way!" "What?" "I found oreos!!" I brought them back to the table and showed Daryl. "Here have some. The cookies are probably hard as a rock now, but the creams the best part anyway." thinking the cream probably wasn't any better. "Eww, no cookies the best, you can have the cream." he peeled the cream off throwing it at my face.
"Unnecessary." I laughed wiping the goo off my face.
I left the table and started to make a fire in the fireplace from the matches and wood we had found. I finally got it started and stood up, walking over to the couch to sit down.
Daryl walked over with the oreos in his hand. He put them down on the floor, having finished almost a third already. He sat down next to me and wrapped his hand around my shoulder. I allowed him to pull me into a half-hug, I guess, and I leaned my head against his shoulder. We sat there for a while, before I drifted off to sleep.
