Feel free to ask any questions you might have. I know some of the names might be hard to pronounce, so don't hesitate to ask about pronunciation. Also, if anything was not clear or you'd like to know more about anything in the story, let me know and I'll clear it up.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to read this, if you like it vote and tell your friends about it! My updating schedule will be a bit crazy for a few weeks, and then I can smoothen it out as I will be busy for most of this month.

Chapter 1

The tired beast shifted restlessly atop a pile of boulders he had spent the night on. Each day only prolonged his suffering, sometimes he even wished for death to come quicker only to throw away the idea with disgust. He wasn’t that old, but not many had reached his age and had remained alone. Most had already found a mate, laid many eggs. Yet he was alone.

Lifting himself from his comfortable perch, he heaved a mighty sigh and spread out his wings. His muscular legs crouched and with a push off the ground that shook the trees in the immediate area, he took to the sky.

If any of the villagers in the town just a few miles away had glanced at the sky, they would have been awed at the sight of the magnificent dragon as he flew ever higher into the sky.

This was what he lived for; the soft caress of the wind on his scales as he soared through the open sky, the warmth of the sun on his back, the way his wings seemed to move on their own as they pushed him through the sky.

Four hundred miles below…

Today will mark the ninth anniversary of my parent’s death, and my twentieth birthday.

The field I stood in was quiet as always, only the sound of the forest life to accompany me as I lifted my bow and aimed at the target a few hundred yards away. I inhaled and drew the string back, and as I exhaled I released it. The arrow sung through the air before landing true to its intended target. The center of the haystack.

I was just tugging the arrows out of the hay when the familiar sound of my friend shouting my name broke the calm atmosphere of the clearing.

“Annalise!” He shouted as he burst through the trees and practically mowed me down on my way back to my horse, Arronaght.

Rolling my eyes, I turned around and crossed my arms, an expectant look on my features. “Please tell me you didn’t get caught stealing another one of Jameson’s cattle. There’s no way I’m helping you with that again. The man is practically a bear when you get him started.”

He flushed and rubbed the back of his head. “No. And it was only that one time, Anna! I haven’t stolen anything since then and you know it.”

I laughed and turned to tie my equipment to the saddlebags. “Yeah, I know. It is just too much fun to tease you though.”

Jonathan and I have been friends ever since he found me crying on the blood-soaked floor of my house after I witnessed the murder of my parents. He is the only one here- him and his mother- who fully accepted my appearance and the only ones I feel I would miss if I ever had a reason to finally leave this village.

I can remember the day clearly, as if it were only yesterday.
