DEDICATED to @HiddenHideously for the amazing cover. Thank you so much!

I've never seen my mother's face so white before. Her white hair doesn't help the fact that she is in danger of completely blending in with the white wall behind her. In fact, the only thing that's stopping her from blending in with our living room wall is her red eyes and red lips. Her lips, which are naturally red, look even more intense with the clear lip-gloss she wore. I find myself staring at my mother's lips a lot. I am oddly fascinated with my mother's lips. They are just so red. It's incredible. I wish that I'd inherited my mother's lips. Mine are more of a soft pink, not at all exciting.

"That-that bastard!" Mom says furiously. Her fingers curl into a tight fist, and I just know that her sharp nails must be digging into her skin painfully. She's too angry to notice, obviously. "That absolute toad. That traitor! That-,"

"Mommy," My sister-Azrielle-says from her spot on our snow white sofa. "We get it, alright? He's an asshole."

I roll my eyes. My older sister, who is seventeen, still calls our mother mommy and it's very annoying. And she always uses a whiny, squeaky voice when speaking to mom. She acts like an overgrown baby, which is ironic, because she's such a slut. I nicknamed her the slutty baby a while ago, though I'd never dare call her that to her face. Azrielle's eyes narrow at me as if she can tell what I'm thinking. I look away.

"Yes, indeed, he is an asshole." Mom says through gritted teeth. I try to hide my shock that my mother hasn't bitten my sisters head off for using profanity. "And don't say asshole. Azrielle." Spoke too soon.

My sister makes a snorting noise, another thing my mom hates. "You can call him a toad but I can't call him an asshole?"

I give her a warning look, but she only makes a face at me in return. My mother just ignores her.

"How could he do this? And now, just two days before this so called school starts. He didn't even give us time to prepare."

"I already told you why, mommy," Azrielle says. "Claude is an asshole."

"A big asshole." Mom agrees. "Stop saying that word!"

Personally, I think my mother is overreacting. I don't mind that I'll be attending Adamsville High Alternative: Vampires Only ( They call it an alternative school, but it's actually only for vampires). For as long as I can remember I-we, us, the vampires, have been forced to attend school with humans, being treated as if we have some disease. Being avoided, ignored, feared as if we were undomesticated animals. Why would anyone want that? So yes, secretly, I am a little excited to attend high school with vampires only. Not only will I be free of humans, but now I can meet actual vampires, see how they all really act around each other.

Before, it was illegal to have more than ten vampires in one school together. They were afraid that we'd all get together and aspire against the teachers and try to take over and eat everyone or something stupid like that. We still aren't allowed to live in neighborhoods with a certain amount of vampires, for the same reason. They've never actually said the reason for all of this, or made it illegal for us to even interact with too many other vampires. It is still pretty clear that they don't want us interacting with each other, they start to get suspicious, and then there's always law enforcement that always just so happen to be around.

I don't understand why they changed their minds-better yet, why Claude Irvian, Adamsville's founder, the guy who is running this town-changed his mind about us all going to one school together. There are four founders total, but clearly, Mr. Irvian is the one running the show. Anyway, they claim that it's because some vampire attacked a girl in her high school-a human obviously, and they realized what a danger we were to the humans. Apparently, they've been working on this school all summer. They had vampires doing it so that it'd be done in time, and they just announced it today. It's all so last minute, but I don't care. I'm just thankful, in a way.
