"Jean Louise, come here young lady, your brother is awake!" I heard aunt Alexandra call from Jem's room.
I jumped out of my bed and ran into Jem's room, "Jem, I saw Boo! I saw him, I really did!"
Aunt Alexandra frowned at me. "That's no way to greet your brother."
"Sorry." I mumbled, even though I didn't know what I did to make her face scowl like that.Jem sat up, "Quit lying Scout, you didn't see Boo."
"I ain't lyin', Jem! I saw him, he saved us, he really did!"
Jem snorted, and Aunty kept frowning. I wished she'd stop making that face at me, I didn't like it to much. I looked at Jem, who was looking at his lame arm. I leaned over the bed and looked at it too. It didn't look different, but Jem seemed real interested in it. It just looked like a normal arm, but this one had a white bandage on it."What's that?¨ I asked, pointing to the bandage.
"It's a sling, it will heal your brother's arm." Said Aunty.
"Can I have one?" I asked, it looked real cool.
"Not unless you break your arm." Jem said, his eyes still focused on the sling, the sling that I didn't have.
"Don't be getting any ideas Scout, If you break your arm just to get a sling I'll break your other one."
I turned around and looked in the direction that the voice came from.
"Look, Atticus, Jem's up!"
"I see. Now go get ready for school. I'm taking you." Atticus told me.
"Sir?" Atticus wasn't making any sense, Jem takes me to school everyday.
"Your brother isn't going to school for a little while, honey."
"What! That's no fair!"
"Jean Louise, do not whine like that, now listen to your father and go get dressed." Aunt Alexandra scolded me.
I groaned and walked into my room.
I digged in my drawer until I found my overalls. After searching for a while I finally found them. I slipped off my pajamas and put a shirt on, then put the overalls on over it. I looked and looked, but I could not find any of my socks. I tried putting on my shoes without socks, but I didn't like the feel of it. So, I took the uncomfortable shoes off and continued my search. Minutes later, I quit and walked into Jem's room.
"Are any of my socks clean?" I asked no one in particular.
"Have Calpurnia get you some from the laundry room." Aunty said, not taking her eyes off Jem, who was asleep again.I walked into the kitchen and saw Calpurnia making breakfast.
"Hey Cal, can you get me some socks?" I asked her.
"No, but you could grab 'em from the laundry." she said.
After I finished putting on my socks, Cal called everyone down for breakfast.
I sat in my usual seat, waiting for Aunt Alexandra, Atticus, and Jem to come down. After a few moments, they all came down, all except Jem.
"Where's Jem?" I asked.
"Jem will be eating in bed today, Scout." Calpurnia said as she put down a glass of orange juice in front of me. I sighed and took a sip. After giving everyone else their drinks, Calpurnia set down the food, eggs with bacon.
"Have a good day at school, Scout, behave. I'll be back later to walk you home." Atticus said, while he knelt down and hugged me.
"See ya soon, Atticus." I said.
He turned and walked away as the bell rang, signalling that I had to get to class soon.
I walked as slowly as I could. Maybe if I took a long time to get to class, I would get to skip it.Walter Cunningham looked back at me. "C'mon, Scout. Class is starting soon."
I sighed, and picked up the pace. I found myself in the classroom doorway faster than I would have liked. I walked over to my seat and sat down, glaring at Walter.
Miss Emily started the class, and I half heartedly listened."Jean Louise what did I just say?"
I shot my head up, "Huh?"
"I said that we will be learning about mockingbirds today." Miss Emily sighed.
"Atticus and Miss Maudie already taught me about them." I told her.
"What did they say?"
"Atticus says it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
"Is that so?" she asked.
I nodded. "It's 'Cause all they do is make music for us, they don't do none to harm us, Miss Emily."
My teacher nodded. "Well, pay attention please."
I listened as she told us facts about mockingbirds, trying to remember all of the information."Atticus!" I yelled as I ran to him.
"How was school, Scout?" He asked me.
"It was okay, we learned about mockingbirds."
"What did you learn?"
We started to walk home, my steps falling into rhythm with his.
"We learned that mockingbirds can learn up into two-hundred songs, and that the girl birds don't sing as much." I told Atticus.
"That's interesting," He said, and I nodded.
"Did you tell them what I told you?"
"Yes, Sir I did. I even told them what Miss Maudie told me." I responded.
"Good, I hope the other kids learned something from you."We walked in silence for a while until I broke it.
"Wanna know something, Atticus?" I asked him as I looked up to see his face.
"What is it?" He asked, looking down at me.
"Tom was kinda like a mockingbird."
"How so?" He asked me another question.
"Tom didn't do nothin' to harm us, he just went about his own business, but people still hurt him."
Atticus stopped walking.
After thinking for awhile he said, "You're a very smart young lady, Jean Louise."
I smiled, and pulled him along. "Come on Atticus, let's go home."Author note: Well that's it, I told you it was quick! I hope you enjoyed! :)
