Power. It is a word that holds many different meanings. When you look at the definition of this word, you get a little something like, "the ability to do something or act in a particular way." One's ability to do something, whatever that something may be, and the way one acts gives them power.

Do you ever think about how people gain this power? CEO's work hard and work as underdogs until their talents are recognize. Once they reach the top, people respect them enough for them, so the CEO's natural power over them. Other CEO's fuck their way to the top, kissing ass along the way, but still maintaining that same power.

Revolutionists force their power on people. They strip people on the top of the food chain till they are naked to the world by their words, and gain their power by taking theirs. People stop to listen to their words, giving them more power by starting revolutions.

The other source comes from somewhere more raw and even more useful.

Fear.

People who fear others, give them power. And those people will take it, twist it, shake it, and use every last drop of it.

But what about other sources of power? When you sit and watch moves of these amazing people who save the day with their special abilities, it almost seems natural. No one ever questions where their powers come from. It is usually explained; scientists, radioactive spiders, born on a different planet, and being rich enough to make gadgets that gives the illusion of power. But what about the people who have no explanation? They don't know why they are the way they are. Do you ever wonder where they come from, what made them this way?

...Do you even know they exist?

The world likes having unexplainable things be trapped in a box at the heart of their living rooms. People can't handle those kinds of things in real life.

So the naturally gifted hide. They pretend to be normal, because that is what everyone else wants.

And when I say "they," I really mean "me."

No special effects, no computerized CGI shit, just natural, ungodly, me.

I don't have an explanation for what I am. I don't have some sidekick and I most definitely am no one's hero. I wasn't born on some cosmic universe millions of light years away. I was born right here on Earth. Shitty, predominant, intolerant Earth.

What am I? Am I even a person? Am I even human? Am I-

My thoughts are interrupted by a stack of files being slammed in front of me. I looked down at the crisp documents sitting patiently for my approval. My eyes go over all the information that needed to be drilled into my head while the two large figures stand in the corners of the small interrogation room.

I didn't bother to remember their names, so I decided to just call them as I see them. Bighead was standing to the left of me with his overly muscular arms crossed over his chest as he watched my every move with lack of patients. Junior was to my right, obviously fiddling with his thumbs at the fact that he was not sure how to look as intimidating as Bighead portrayed himself to be.

But he is fucking funny if he thinks he can intimidate me.

I lazily lifted my hands that were bound together by metal cuffs, that were connected to chains that went all the way around my waist and bolted to the floor as an ill attempted to keep me in check, eventually pushing the papers out of my face toward the other side of the table.

"This is horse shit," I barked. "You idiots really think high and mighty of yourselfs don't you? This will never work. You can't stop them from finding me. You really think a stupid fake name is going to stop them?" I chuckled dryly. I shook my head and looked away from them. This whole thing was a waste of my time. "Why don't you just let me go home to my family. I can take care of those ass wipes myself."

I waited impatiently for a reply. Bighead unfolded his arms and came closer to the table. He avoided my eyes, turning the stack of papers over with one hand. He let a huff out before saying, "Adeline Marie Briggs, born May 16 1995 in Huston Texas. Daughter of Walter and Mary. New passport, new social security number, new name, new life." He then looked up with a smug look, "Says here that you don't have a family anymore."

Was this guy fucking serious? He started to get my blood boiling as he played his sick game, continuing to talk about this fake scenario of a life I must live by, "says here your dad died in '05 from cancer," he then looked up with a fake little pout on his lip, "so sorry to hear that," he said sarcastically. "And your mom lost touch with you after you moved in 2014."

He fixed his posture and walked closer to me. He leaned down so his face was close to mine. I can smell the cheap coffee and cigarettes on his breath as he pointed to the papers, "no parents, no siblings, no family. That's the deal, remember?"

I felt myself snarl at him and I felt my heart rate increasing, "can you at least tell me where they are?"

He got up and started to walk back to his post while booming, "no can do princess. We don't want them getting into anymore trouble cause of you now do we?"

I stood up quickly with ease and I felt the bolts on the floor start to pop off.

Junior shakily grabbed for his pistol while Bighead just grinned at my attempts.

"Do you really want to mess with me, old man?"

He just shook his head while laughing right into my face, getting me more worked up than before.

"We all know you can walk out of here at any time, princess. You can go ahead and rip those chains off and walk out these doors without so much as a scratch on you," he walked across the table and leaned in while leaning his hands on the surface. "But I can promise you this, you walk out those doors and there is nothing we can do for your family. They will be sitting ducks, being hunted. If you don't do what we say, they will die. Is that what you want, princess?"

I felt my heart tighten at the thought. That I would be responsible for what will happen. How I was already responsible for everything happening now. My choices brought me here, and because of it, my family has to pay the price. They have to live new lives with new names because of me.

I took a deep breath before I sat down slowly. Bighead just scoffed while Junior pointed the gun that sat in his shaking hands right at me.

I looked at him intently. I could see the balls of sweat beating down his neck. I can feel his fear seeping out of him like water from the tap. I can see his brain jumbling around in confusion as I stared him down.

"Put the gun down, Junior," I whispered ever so slightly, not even blinking. His hands were sweaty and slightly losing grip of the pistol. I can see it in his mind, he is debating weather to pull the trigger. He doesn't know it won't do him any good. I saw the image bright as day right in his head- he pulls the trigger and sends me back to hell where I obviously came from, making him the hero.

I felt the corner of my lip rise slightly in understanding. I can hear Bigheads voice to my left, "Now girl, don't try anything fu-"

In one slight flick of my head the gun flew out of Juniors hands, smashing against the wall near Bighead into a million little shards.

With a small nod, a bullet from inside the debris left on the floor lifted up and flew fast till it was right in front of Juniors face. He backed up into the corner, shaking in complete terror.

I smirked at the trembling man in front of me, seeing in his head that he is trying to hold in his own urine. "I told you to put the gun down."

He began to stutter, not being able to form actual words as he stared at the floating bullet I can plunge into his head at any moment.

"Alright missy, that's enough." I dropped my hard gaze, dropping the bullet in the process. Junior dropped to the floor in relief.

I look over at Bighead and see his stern face toward me. I laugh halfheartedly and half sarcastically.

"Sorry mister. I was just having some fun."

If you look up the word power, you get many different definitions and many different meaning. One of those definitions is, "a supernatural being, entity, or force." The reason that specific definition is my favorite is because of the example sentence that reads afterwards in the dictionary.

The power of darkness.
