"What did you just say?"
I never thought I would see the day a vein actually pops out of someone's neck from anger, but I think today might be that day. The hot headed red head stood in front of me with complete anger and confusion, it was almost comical.
"I said," I spoke with hesitation, not out of fear, but out of irritation. I made sure my words were much slower as I spoke, "That I got a job." My words came out as if it was the most obvious answer to her question. She did not seem very amused.
"What do you mean you got a job?"
"Exactly that."
"You have been gone for an hour."
"I'm aware."
"And you're telling me," she stepped toward me, almost threatening, with an accusing finger pointed at me, "that not only did you leave this apartment without me by your side, but you interacted with people enough for them to hire you?" Her anger had a slight undertone of disbelief in it.
I rolled my eyes, "maybe if you ask me this same question four more times my answer might actually change." I was dripping with annoyance and sarcasm, but Katy didn't seem to care at the moment.
"Why the hell would you get a job?!" Her arms were flying, she actually started to pace around the apartment and was mumbling things to herself. I couldn't make out half of it but something about 'they won't like this' and 'I'm in deep shit' was thrown into her slur of curses towards me.
"Will you stop pacing? It's not like I went outside flailing my arms around going 'Hey look at me everyone!' I went for a walk, and I came back with a job. Who cares." She instantly stopped pacing and came toward me with a force in her step. She was only an inch away from me, her breath skimming my face as she spoke,
"I care." She then turned around. She ran her hand through her hair, stressed as ever. It was amusing, really. We have barely made it through one full day at this apartment without me getting her to want to pull her hair out. I guess that is one more talent I can add to my roster.
"Okay," she finally stopped pacing and took a deep breath before opening her eyes to speak again, "you can keep the job," Like I would quit if you'd asked me to, but continue. "But you need to keep a low profile. I can't stress this enough Adeline. We can't afford anyone getting close to us. If any information got out about our wearabouts than we have to relocated."
"I already know all of this, why are you explaining this to-"
"Because relocation takes time. A new place, new names, new paperwork... By the time everything gets done it might already be too late."
Too late? what did she mean by that?
and than it hit me.
I felt a shiver run down my spine. Not one of fear, or regret, but one of anger. I would never let those people hurt me again. They will have to deal with my full ability before I let them take me down. I took a deep breath, letting my muscles relax a bit before I spoke.
"Well, let's not let that happen than, shall we?"
I started to walk towards my designated room, ready to get some rest from this long day. Right before I was about to shut my door I heard Katy shout at me one last time, "By the way, do you have any idea why there are a bunch of cracks in the shower wall?"
"Good night, Katy!"
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I woke up the next morning to the sun shining in my eyes from the window. The bed in my room was a small twin size, not anything like my old queen size bed. I woke up with limbs falling off the edge, dangling like a cold corpse. I let an inhumane grown out before lifting my finger ever so slightly, making the curtain close all the way with ease on its own. Without moving any further, I closed my eyes, ready for more dreamless sleep.
