"Lucinda, get up! You are going to be late!" I groan. Rolling over, I see the clock and jump out of bed, hurriedly trying to get dressed. "Liam! Why didn't you wake me sooner?!" Liam is my twenty-eight year old brother and has been my legal guardian since he was sixteen. I don't know how he worked that out.
As I shoved my legs into my jeans, I bounced up and down to pull them up my long legs. I threw on a white tank top then reached in my closet for my special shirt. I have been waiting weeks to wear it! Aunt Hannah bought me this shirt so I could wear it today when she visits. It is a black, long-sleeve, v-neck shirt. There are glittering designs all down the arms, and the glittering outline of perfect stars on the front. It is beautiful.
So as not to ruin the shirt, I layed it out on my bed and ran to the bathroom to finish getting ready. "Woah! Don't you look like a hot mess?!" I sent him a death glare and he laughed. "It's your fault ass-hat! You woke me up late!" I had just finished brushing my hair. I turned on my straightener then started to brush my teeth. "Well, I guess you won't be getting any presents then. Ass-hats are not gift-giving people." Liam smiled and started to leave the room. "No, wait! Ok. I take it back. You are the best brother in the world." My words were muddled up because of the foaming toothpaste dribbling down my chin, but Liam understood them.
He was grinning like an idiot as he gave me a small, black velvet jewelry box. I smiled slightly as I opened it. "Oh my god Liam! It's gorgeous!" Liam started blushing. I found it cute so I kiss him on the cheek and hug him. "I thought you might like it. Do you want me to put it on you?" Liam bought me a sapphire horseshoe necklace with a gold chain and gold rim. "Yes please! Thank you Liam!" I couldn't keep my tears at bay and I break down crying and laughing. "Oh Lucy! I didn't mean to make you cry!" Liam leans back and looks me in the eyes. "I know Liam. I'm happy and I love it." Liam nodds his head. "I love you Lucinda, happy birthday." He wipes my tears away and kisses my forehead. "I love you too Liam." I smile and pull away so I can straighten my hair. "Hurry up and get ready, I'll take you to school." I start straightening my hair. "Thanks Big Brother!"

"There's the birthday girl!" I shut my locker door and look up at Marcus Balinsky, my best friend since forever. I smile. "That's me!" Marcus and I start walking to class. "So you feel old yet?" I punch Marcus in the arm and he laughs. "Seventeen is not old Marcus!"
"What's not old?" Andrea Dovet, my best friend since sixth grade, walks up to me and we link arms. "Seventeen." Andrea punches Marcus. "Don't be an ass!" Marcus laughs while rubbing his arm. "Ow An, that hurt! Well, I better get going, no need to become a human punching bag!" Marcus gives me a quick peck on the cheek and leaves. Andrea and I are laughing while walking to Chemistry. "Marcus is insane!" We unhook our arms and sit in our desks (right next to each other). "Yes but that's what makes him special!" We burst into another fit of laughter.
The bell rings signalling the beggining of class and we get out our needed supplies. All of a sudden a piece of folded paper flies onto my desk. 'When is your party?' It's An. I respond back. 'I don't know! Liam and I never discussed it!' I toss the paper back across the desks to her. I hear a stifled gasp then the paper is flying back to me. 'WHAT! What do you mean you haven't discussed it with him! You are seventeen Lucy, you have to have a party!' I sigh. 'An, you know we don't have much money.' I toss the paper back across the desks again. This time I hear a sigh and I look up. An nodds her head and tosses the paper back. 'I know... We can try to work something out though, okay?' I look at Andrea and smile. "Lucinda and Andrea! Throw it away before I read it to the whole class!" I instantly blush and throw the note away while everyone else giggles. An gives me an apologetic look and we get to writing class notes.
