{1} Dark Houses and Fajitas
(Five Years Later)
Tightening my grip on my bag I forced myself to walk across the street and avoid the dark buildings that seem to call out my name, begging me to walk through their half-hinged doors and into the dusty rat infested ruins. If it would have been a few years back, I wouldn't have hesitated to force myself into the darkness those buildings offer before losing myself completely to my demons. Not anymore though, I was a changed man. As I walked under the flickering streetlights I glanced at my phone and cursed myself for being out so late. Diesel was going to kick my ass if I didn't hurry up. Throwing my heavy bag over my shoulder I took off in a slight jog while attempting not to look suspicious to passersby. The last thing I needed right now was for someone to think I was stealing or selling drugs and for the cops to become involved. I had worked hard on improving my life, there was no way I was going to screw that up now.
A few blocks later I turned the corner into our quiet neighborhood. The streetlights illuminating the slightly cracked sidewalks and the chalk covered streets. I heaved a sigh of relief as I looked at my phone and saw that I was ten minutes early. I sprinted up the three steps to the porch and opened the door to the house immediately being greeted by Arrow, who was glaring at me from his spot atop of Axel's feet. I rolled my eyes at the Rottweiler's judging look before hurrying into the kitchen. "Harlen, thank fuck man, I thought you were going to be late." Diesel shot me a thankful look before turning to Axel. "Don't let Arrow bully him. I'll see you both in a week. Be good." He instructed causing the younger boy to laugh.
"See ya later," Axel replied while petting his giant dogs head. With one last thankful look, Diesel patted his pockets to make sure he had what he needed before rushing out the door while shouting that he loved us. I rolled my eyes at the frantic man before dropping my bag on the counter with a loud thud making Axel flinch slightly.
"What's up kid?" I greeted, making the younger boy scowl at me. I couldn't stop myself from laughing at his adorable pout. At eighteen, Axel was the youngest of us all. His older brother, Remy had moved us all down here back when Axel was just thirteen after their father became terminally ill. The hospitals here in Washington were more equipped to handle the around the clock care the man had needed. Remy was the oldest of the siblings at twenty-eight, he was a co-founder of a law firm stationed out of Seattle for one of the biggest criminal prosecuting offices on the west coast, their conviction rate was astounding. He was married to his high school sweetheart Jordan, who had also moved across the country from Pennsylvania and worked as a paralegal at the firm. The happy couple had moved out a few years back when Jordan ended up pregnant, and they decided it was time to leave the nest.
Next was Hunter, who at twenty-five was usually too serious for his own good. He worked as a psychiatrist specializing in children who have suffered through harsh abuse of all kinds. He owned his own practice in the city and often volunteered his time to outreach programs for children who came from abusive homes. It was amusing to see such a man working with children. He was on the larger side, with dark hair that matched Axel's, and green eyes. The man was built like a tank, having played football, hockey and even competed in wrestling tournaments all throughout school, and well into college. He didn't seem like the type to work with kids, but it was his passion.
Just two years younger than Hunter, were me and Diesel, who was the third oldest brother. He stayed on track with college and getting his life together and was working his way up as a member to some linguistics company. He was often going in and out of the house on trips all over the U.S and in places like Asia and Europe to manage deals and translate for American business men who worked with foreign companies. At twenty-three we were the last two in the house with Axel. But unlike the White brothers, I hadn't followed the righteous path. Having been friends with Diesel and Hunter since Junior high Remy moved me with them because the place I'd been living before was less than ideal. There was a threat before the move even took place, that I cleaned up my act or he would put me back out on the streets without a second glance or any type of support. I hadn't known him that well at the time but anything was better than what I had, so I agreed. Giving him my word to clean up my act and straighten out my life. I hit some snags along the way, ones that almost put me back out on my own, but I kept my word and got my life straight. There was no way with my record, and the fact that I had dropped out of high school that I could ever get a job like the other guys, so I made do with what I had. I started with some low paying scummy jobs and eventually got my GED then opened my own garage. I was proud to say that with a little help from the guys to start her up, I made a pretty decent living from owning my own shop.
