Project of Praise

Inspired by: A real-life project in which two guys, as an assignment, found a girl and gave her confidence through praise.

Summary: You go through life listening to people always being compared to you, degrading you, asking why you aren’t “the best” like others. “Why can’t you be more like my friend’s daughter? She has all A’s, you don’t!” “Look at your older sister, she’s so much better than you, why can’t you do better?” “You’re so quiet, why don’t you have any confidence? You’ll never get through life if you keep being like that!” “Watch yourself, don’t be too weird out in public, you’ll disgrace us.”

A little praise may sound so farfetched, you aren’t used to it. But praise, as little as it is, can go a long way.

“Today, for your lesson, you will choose groups of two to six and do a lesson,” Marc stated, looking at the psychology class expectantly, already knowing who the five boys sitting in the front were going to choose.

Immediately, the five dorm mates cheered excitedly along with their classmates.

“TREVOR’S IN OUR GROUP.”

“NO FAIR YOU GOT TO PIGGY BACK TREVOR LAST TIME! HE’S IN OUR GROUP NOW. WE CALL DIBS.”

“I WANT NATE.”

“BACK OFF JAKE, FIND YOUR OWN PRETTYBOY TO EXPLOIT,” William yelled.

“FINE THEN I WANT MATT.”

“TOUCH HIM AND DIE,” Henri growled, putting a protective arm over Matt.

“RICKY JOIN OUR GROUP.”

“No,” The spiky brown hair rejected immediately.

“Hurtful.”

“Now, before you guys go and destroy everything in sight,” Marc yelled over the loud arguing of the class. “Promise me you guys will not freak out once I give you guys the details of this assignment.”

The class quieted, all the boys staring at the teacher who sighed reluctantly.

“This project is over the span of five months. Your job is to figure out how one thing can affects their whole being.  That could be on how superstition changes people, or how lies can cause someone to become delusional. Any is fine, as long as it gives an insight into the human mind.”

The whole class nodded slowly, eager to get into groups and talk.

“And, because this is a five month project… This is an off campus project, and it’s going to be conducted at the second campus.”

Total silence.

And then, chaos.

“WAIT SO THE OTHER CAMPUS REALLY EXISTS?!” A guy yelled as two of the jocks behind him high fived each other, cheering.

“THE ONE WITH THE GIRLS?!” A music major asked, two guys in front of him hugging the life out of each other.

“WHERE IS THIS?! FINALLY, WE MEET CIVILIZATION!” Henri cheered, standing up in his seat and grabbing Matt to hug him.

“You guys make it sound as if we trapped you in here and don’t feed you,” Marc grumbled, picking up the handouts and passing them out. “But yes. It’s going to be conducted on our second campus. The co-ed one.”
