Sunny sat in her bay window watching the day fade into night. A sense of reminiscence rushed through her as she looked over the rosey-hued Riverdale. The town was most quiet at sunset, the people of the fair town only preoccupied by the ever fading
sun. 8:24 pm was the time on July 4th, when Sunny Vasquez got a text alerting her to the disappearance of one Jason Blossom, a redheaded king of the Riverdale Highschool social scene. She tucked a piece of her curly dark locks behind her ear as she sent her partially insincere condolences to the Blossom family to save face, when in reality she could care less. Jason and his goons had made her life hell but she would never admit it to anyone. Ever. Especially now that he was gone; it would be rude to say anything now. No one would believe her anyway.
She looked down at the street below her, head resting on her left hand, when saw a boy run past her home. His red hair fooled her into thinking it was Jason Blossom, but upon further inspection it was a boy she must've never paid much attention to. Now she was thinking that she probably should.
Sunny soon forgot about the boy and returned to gazing at the sky. It was fully dark now, only the
stars and the streetlights that lined the streets to light the town."Chiquita?" Her mom called from down the hall. "I have something for you," she said as she entered the room with a small box in hand. Melissa took a seat next to her daughter in the window seat and gave the box to her.
"It's was abuelita's before she passed, que Dios la tenga en su gloria," she said as she touched her own heart. Sunny opened the small box which revealed a small golden locket with para siempre engraved on the front.
"Oh, mom... it's beautiful," Sunny said in awe. "But why?"
"No sè, chica. I just felt like you needed to have it. It was given to abuela back in San Juan, but who knows who gave it to her. She once told me that a heart is more precious than any gold and to always be careful with it. And now I give that advice to you," Melissa said, stroking her daughter's hair gently. She clipped the locket onto her neck as the teen moved her hair to the side. Sunny embraced her mother in a warm hug as a single tear slipped down her face.
"Sunny, I know that it's just me and you now, and trust me, that's so weird, but I want you to know that you are worth more to me than anything in this whole world," she gushed as she pushed Sunny
back into a sitting position and wiped her daughter's single tear.Just then a knock came from the front door. Sunny ran up to open the door but was not expecting the face that was awaiting. The shirtless redheaded boy that was running earlier was at the door and to say she was surprised would be an understatement. He looked so familiar but the girl could not stick a name the face.
"Hello-"
"I'm Archie. Can I use your phone?" He asked as she let him inside. His frazzled look made her feel panicked but she complied and gave him the home phone.
"Um, yeah, I guess? Do you mind me asking who you need to call so badly?" Sunny said quietly as he typed in the number.
Archie laughed at her question slightly, realizing the situation made him look bad. "I just need to call my dad," he responded as she nodded and looked towards the ground.
"Dad?"
"ArcHIBALD what the HELL?! Its 9:30 and you decided to call me now? What are you thinking?"
"I know, Dad, I just-"
"Do you know??? Do you? I've been worried sick. Haven't you heard about Jason Blossom? He's missing!"Sunny rolled her eyes at the name but the conversation persisted nonetheless.
"Dad can you please just pick me up? I'm at 914 Rosen St."
"You're lucky I love you,"Archie then hung up the phone and handed it back to its owner. Sunny moved her eyes to anywhere but him, afraid she might embarrass herself.
"So...." Archie dragged out.
"So...." she said the same way.The boy studied the girl's face; she was so familiar.
"You're Sunshine or something, right? I think I've seen you at school before," he smiled brightly.
"It's Sunny," she said as she self-consciously pinched her sweater and looked towards the floor.
"Alright, Sunshine, nice to meet you. Thanks for letting me use your phone; you're a life saver," he said with relief.
Sunny was silent, a sense of shyness washed over her like a tidal wave."How come we've never talked?" He flirted, his eyebrows moving up with a smirk on his face. Sunny suddenly felt very nervous.
"I don't think you've ever been in my classes," the brunette trailed off, silently hoping his eyes would leave her or that his father would soon arrive.
But he didn't.
"Um it seems like your dad is gonna be a while do you want anything?" She questioned sweetly while finally looking up at him. His facial features were gorgeous, she couldn't lie.
He looked her face over again before finally snapping out of it."Actually can I please have some water? I'm seriously parched,"
She nodded and led him back to the kitchen. The girl grabbed a glass from the shelf and filled in with water. He greatfully accepted the water, flashing her a small smile and meeting her eyes before taking a sip.
"Take a fucking sip, babes," Sunny thought while smiling to herself. Archie almost spit out his water trying not to laugh.
"Wha-"
Archie let out a loud laugh and Sunny felt a blush rise to her cheeks. "Did you actually just say that?" He chuckled.
"Oh shoot," she whispered, mentally facepalming. There was a loud honk outside and the two kids turned around.
Archie's father arrived, his headlights shining brightly through the window. The boy wrote something down on a piece of paper before saluting Sunny.
"Thanks, Sunshine," he yelled before walking out the door.
On the paper was his number and a heart."Somebody's got a boyfriend!" Her mom yelled from her room.
"Mom no!"
