I hold on tightly to Craig’s hand as we shuffle our way through the excited crowd. Mark just through down a winning run and the crowd can hardly control themselves. We only celebrated for a brief moment before booking it to the podium.
I want to be as happy as the crowd, but I have barely seen my boyfriend in two months, and now because of the win, he’ll be partying all night.
We’ve been dating seven months now. We make it work, but lately I’ve felt more distant from him than ever. Interviews, competitions, and travel keep him away from me. That was expected, but since it was an Olympic year, Mark has had constant attention on him. Even when I’m with him, we’re still not alone. I never complain to Mark or Craig though. We all knew this would be tricky.
Craig and I reach the podium as Mark, Stale Sandbech, and Max Parrot get their medals. Champagne is flying in every direction and Craig scoops me up in celebration. I glance up at my laughing boyfriend who is having champagne poured into his mouth.
He hasn’t looked my way yet.
“Come on Keeks, we’ll meet Mark back at the Red Bull house.” Craig says to me. I frown. I want to see Mark now, but of course he has some signing to do.
The short drive back to the house seemed to take forever. Craig was talking to some friends about the party tonight, while I wanted to do tonight is stay home with my boyfriend.
“Are you going to get all fancy tonight, Keeks?” Craig asks after realizing I haven’t said anything in awhile. All the boys in the car look at me.
“If by fancy you mean put on jeans, then yes, I’ll be getting fancy.” Craig and the guys laugh. After that they all go back to talking about the party.
Back at the house, the party seems to have already started. Craig and his buddies crack open a few beers and start doing the reckless shit the always do. Tonight’s event is taking sleds down the staircase and doing a flip over the railing onto pillows. I decide to be a party pooper and go take a nap until Mark gets home.
“Wake up, pretty girl” Mark whispers into my ear. I open my eyes to see him leaning over me. I grab his flannel and pull him onto me. He starts kissing me.
“Babe we gotta get dressed.” Mark says in between kisses. I try dragging him under the covers, but he’s resisting.
“Lets stay here. I promise it will be worth it.” I tell Mark as I start unbuttoning his shirt. I can feel him pause and consider my offer, but he rebounds quickly.
“I want to stay here with you-“ Mark stops to kiss me more “but we can’t just not-“ more kissing “show up. It would be rude.”
I give Mark a pouty face.
“I’ll make this up to you, Keeks.” Mark says, getting off the bed and giving me a cheeky smile. He starts buttoning up his shirt again.
I just want to be with him. It shouldn’t be this difficult.
