July 13th. Sunny is sitting in her backyard, thinking in how life changes quickly. Days ago, she was a simple girl from Tennessee, trying to show her friends she was capable...and now, she just feels lost.

Two days ago, Sunny graduated from high school. And the prom...oh! It was everything she and her friends could imagine...and they have done it for years! Thinking about all the details: the dress, the flowers, the hair, the make-up...and even their dates! But now, looking back, it all seems just a faded memory...

But let's just stop here for a while. Let me introduce myself to you. I'm Sunny. I'm 18 years old and I have brown hair and brown eyes. I'm 5 feet 5 inches. I use to think I have a lot of dreams in my head...but not so much tenaciousness to complete them. I have two best friends: Kayla and Ingrid. Kayla is the oldest. She is 19 years old and has an amazing long brown-ish hair that perfectly contrasts with her blue eyes and white skin. She is the "cerebral" one, always calling me back to the Earth...but she can also be a little bit wild! Ingrid is half-Dutch, and she is the most funny of us. With her curly blond hair and green eyes (what I consider exotic!), she is always catching everybody's attention.

We have become friends in the first year of high school, in a rainy afternoon. I've had just moved in to my new house and my life was quite a mess until that day, let's be honest...Obviously and like always, I forgot to bring un umbrella...and while I was looking for someone to help me getting my way home, I bumped into two girls that were chatting outside. Everyone was upset because of the rain, but they did not seem to care and they were laughing out loud. I was so fascinated with them that I've asked them how to get home...and after a brief conversation, I found out that Kayla was one of my new neighbours. Ingrid did not live far away though, so we rid home together...and the friendship began.

Thinking about it, it makes me smile. It was a great day...that now seems so distant in time...

Dylan walks by:

- Hey, what are you doing there? It's so hot in here! Come in!

- I'm going, dad.

While I'm getting up, I'm thinking in how amazing my dad was in this last year. The death of my mother, Linda, was still fresh in my memory...even though it happened three years ago. Linda was always smiling but the stomach cancer she got eventually stole the smile away from her face. From that fatidic day, Sunny remembers the promise she made: she would give 120% to fight diseases like that, by becoming a doctor.

Now, it was time to face the truth and keep the promise: the high school was over and the university was designing as a new chapter in her life. Sunny felt that she was ready for it, even anxious for it...she barely knew what was coming...but very soon she would face it.
