CHAPTER TWO : MEETING YOU
Toris
The Dauntless crowd that lead us takes the stairs instead of the elevator.
Then, everyone starts running. I hear whoops and shouts and laughter all around me, and dozebs of thundering feet moving at different rythms. It's not a selfless act, it's a wild act.
"What in the world is happening?" someone shouts at me.
I shrug and run with the Dauntless as they burst through the exit. The air is crisp and cold and the sky is light orange from the setting sun. I look to my left and wonder what the twins could be doing by now. I follow the Dauntless down the street and around the corner and I hear a familiar sound: the train horn.
I laugh loud and realise, my body is eager. I've been praticing jumping on and off a moving vehicle since I was nine.
I hear the sound louder and louder. I push myself against the Dauntless crowd and stop running when I am in between two Dauntless-born. I lurch myself towards the train and hold the handle near the door. I easily jumped in.
"Well done." A Dauntless-born guy was already inside. He walks toward me and pats my shoulder.
I smile and help a Candor girl get in.
I stopped helping when I made sure everyone was in. All but one. An Erudite girl.
The same Candor girl pats my shoulder. Pale complexion, black eyes, chin length hair. Pretty.
"Hi. I'm Lala. Thanks for helping me." She offers her hand.
"Toris. Welcome." I take her hand and shake it casually.
"Where we going?" she asks.
"Dauntless compound." I reply. We have to shout to each other and fight the wind.
"Yeah, but, where is it?" she says.
"I really don't have any idea." I smile.
"They're just like mushrooms. They just pop in unexpectedly." She wrinkles her nose.
After half an hour, the train finally slows down. Then, it's time for us to jump off.
I take Lala's wrist and say.
"Okay, Lala, on three. One.......Two.......Three." And we both jump off. We both land on a roof top. I already expected this. I land solid on my feet.
Lala laughs and I laugh with her.
"Oh my God, we should do that again." she says in between her laughs.
"We would always do that." I reply.
Then, we both hear an ear-piercing wail. I looked around and searched. Finally, I see it. I see her. A Dauntless girl stands at the edge of the roof, staring at the ground below, shouting 'Adrian'. Behind her, another Dauntless girl holds her waist to keep her from falling down.
"Mackenzie." she starts. "Mackenzie, just calm-"
And Mackenzie screams again.
I stand and look over the edge. And I see it. A cold, lifeless body on the pavement. His limbs bent at a different angle and blood all around his corpse, eyes wide open.
I let out a sigh, close my eyes, and turn away. Questions linger in my mind. Will I be like Adrian a few days from now? Or will I be able to pass and be a member? And I found my answer. I can. I will.
