The halls were crowded the next day at Elendic Academy. Everyone was trying to get to their dorms, find their friends, carry bags of supplies, and push their way down the hallway. The teachers tried to keep people from running, but there was too much commotion so they gave up. It was very loud. You could hear people's shoes on the ground, bags being dragged, flimsy papers, and the chatter of students. The main hallway was the busiest. That's where students had to go to find out what dorm they are in. There were many mishaps in the past where some people misheard a dorm number or went to the wrong wing, but eventually, everyone got settled. This year, it was the same thing all over again.
Cecil carried three large bags filled with school supplies and stuff for his room. They were heavy but he eventually got past the large crowd shoving their way through. He finally got to the main hallway and realized his troubles were not over quite yet. Cecil squeezed through small gaps between people to make his way towards the Administrator of Students. He was the one telling students what dorm they were in. He was surrounded by people and screaming out numbers so the students could hear him. It was all very deafening.
"WHAT IS YOUR NAME?" he asked loudly when Cecil got his turn.
"Ganfree," Cecil said back.
"WHAT?"
"GANFREE! CECIL GANFREE!" he yelled.
The man flipped through papers on a clipboard till he came to a halt on one page. He ran his finger down it and then found the name he was looking for.
"DORM 208 IN THE UPSTAIRS EAST WING!" the Administrator roared back and then turned to the next student.
Cecil pushed his way through the crowd, toward the east wing. The halls slowly became less and less dense, the farther in the school he went. His bags slowly became too heavy to carry on his back and arms, so he set one on the ground and dragged it.
"Need some help?" asked a voice from behind Cecil. He spun around to see a tall, black haired guy with a blue string bag propped up on his shoulder. He had pale skin, but it suit him. There was a small sparkle in his eye and something secretive behind his grin. Cecil didn't know what to think of him. He just couldn't quite figure out why he looks so familiar.
"No, I got it, thanks though," Cecil told him. He really would like some help, but he didn't want to show anyone he was weak. "My dorm is just down the hall anyway."
"Oh cool! What number?" he asked.
"Ummm," Cecil tried remembering what he was told, "208, I believe."
"Hey, that's my dorm too!"
"What a coincidence!" Cecil was mildly surprised, I mean, what are the odds that a person who just so happens to be walking through this section of the school with nothing but a string bag have a dorm room in this hallway, which doesn't have many rooms in the first place? Kinda easy to tell. "Is there anyone else in there with us?"
"Nope," he answered. "Just you and me. Let's go, we can start setting you up."
"Okay." Cecil heaved his bags back up again and started slowly making his way to the dorm room.
"I'm Jaxton," he said while walking next to Cecil.
"I'm Cecil." Jaxton then held his hand out and Cecil looked down at it. "I would shake your hand if I had a free one."
They both laughed. "Yeah, sorry about that."
"No, it's fine. Oh," Cecil pointed straight ahead, "there's our room!" But once he got closer to the sign that reads '208' he slowly became more unconvinced of what he just said. There was a body-length mirror right next to the sign, but no entrance. "Where's the door?"
"Right here," Jaxton pointed at the mirror in front of them.
Cecil was even more confused. "But how do we get in?"
"How weird is it that you don't know the answer to that?" He wasn't asking a question, he was simply speaking to himself. Jaxton then put his back up to the mirror.
"What are you doing?"
Then Jaxton leaned back and fell into the mirror! Cecil's jaw dropped in surprise. Yours would too if you saw your roommate melt into a mirror.
"Jaxton?" Cecil approached the mirror cautiously. "Jaxton!" he yelled into it. Then he desperately rolled his eyes and turned his back to the mirror. "I can't believe I'm doing this." He took a deep breath, held it in, closed his eyes, and fell into the mirror.
Something soft broke Cecil's fall. He kept his eyes closed, scared of what he was going to see. "Am I dead?" he whispered to himself while slowly opening his right eye to see Jaxton standing in front of him with a smirk.
"Far from it, Cecil." Jaxton gave him a hand to help him up. Cecil took it and stood. He looked down to see that he was sitting on a bing bag. It was a small dark blue one, but soft nonetheless. It was propped up against a wall that had a mirror on it. The mirror was identical to the one that Cecil fell into.
"Where are we then?" Cecil curiously asked. He felt the things around the room to make sure they were real. "And how did we get here?"
"You're not a Full student, are you?" Jaxton asked confused, his right eyebrow arched.
"What's that?" Cecil asked.
Jaxton's eyes opened wide in disbelief. "You don't know what a Full is?"
Cecil shook his head, oblivious to where he truly is.
"What school do you think you're going to?"
"From what I heard, it is one that 'can teach me things that no other school can,'" he quoted.
"Well you aren't wrong," Jaxton chuckled. "This school is here to teach us both studies of Norm and studies of Full. A Norm is someone who is quite normal, nothing out of the ordinary for them. You are a Norm, I'm guessing. Now a Full is someone like me. A person who has special abilities or powers. This school teaches people both magic and standard topics."
"Wow, really? That is so cool!" Cecil's mind was filled with questions. "What power do you have? Will I learn magic? How did we get in here, specifically? Is there any science to magic? Who discovered it? Where does it come from? How do―"
"Cecil!" Jaxton got his attention. "I can answer your questions if you give me time to do so."
"Please," Cecil gave a desperate sigh. "You just opened another world to me."
"Yeah, I can tell." They both laughed. "What do you want to know?"
"Well, you said you are a Full," he started. "What can you do?"
"You mean 'special ability' wise? I have power manipulation. Meaning I can mess with other people's abilities. It's kinda funny sometimes, at least during the times I can control it."
"Amazing," Cecil told him, awestruck.
Jaxton smiled, he thought it was too. "I can also sense if someone has powers sometimes, but usually, since I can't control my powers yet, it is all just a grey area."
"How do you know?"
"I get a small buzzing feeling throughout my body, like I am in a massage chair, only the buzzing is a bit uncomfortable."
Cecil was dumbfounded at all that Jaxton said. He couldn't get enough of it. He was filled with questions and curiosity, but knew he couldn't ask them to Jax without sounding obsessed. But he had one question that he would like answered first. "Am I going to learn magic?
Jaxton laughed. "Unless you already have powers, then you can't learn magic. You can just learn about magic."
"Well that still sounds fun," Cecil said, shrugging. "When are we going to know what our classes are?"
"Well that should be around," Jax looked at his watch and his eyes widened. "Dang it, we're gonna be late!" He grabbed Cecil's arm and bolted through the mirror before Cecil could ask anymore questions.-------------------------------------------------------
