I slammed the door opened, loud enough for the walls to shudder at the impact. Mr. Ambrose didn't even flinched, as he raised his head and looked at me with complete disapproval.'Mr. Linton, you are awfully early.' His lips thinned as he gracefully took a document from his desk and continued working. I closed the door shut and walked over to his desk. I crossed my arms across my chest and looked fiercely down at him.
'Why are you still here? Do not suppose I will pay you extra hours. This will count as the hours you slacked off yesterday.'
'I will talk and you will do as I say.'
'Mr-'
'No. I heard you yesterday, now you will hear me.'
I circled his desk and stood right before him. I noticed a faint look of surprise go through his eyes before the familiar coldness settled like snowflakes to the snow. I straightened my shoulders and glared at him.
'I'm Lillian Linton-'
'Mr. Linton, I'm aware of your female name. '
'No.' I shook my head and threw him a devious smile. Mr. Ambrose's body stiffened at the sight of my white pearls and looked inquisitively at me.
'I am Lillian Linton. I will not succumb to imposed propositions or bend to your will. I am your secretary and will continue to function as so, but I will not yield to your demand of having my hand in marriage.'
My chest heaved in relief as the words fell from my mouth with force and determination. On the other hand, my force and determination didn't seem to sit well with certain someone. Mr. Ambrose's eyes narrowed and slowly, like a wild beast ready to attack an imprudent mouse, rose from his chair.
Looking down at me from his impressive height, Mr. Ambrose took a step right into my direction. My neck stiffened by looking at him in such a steep angle, however it didn't have to wait much for relief since Mr. Ambrose leaned down.
He leaned down to such extent that his breath fanned across my nose and his eyes bore fire into mine. 'You will marry me.'
'Didn't you-'
A tornado seemed to rise into his eyes and move into the room. Goosebumps rose onto my skin and I shivered at the intense look his eyes conveyed. I knew Mr. Ambrose would not settle easily.
I was aware he would put up a fight, however the fire ignited in his eyes after my blatant rejection was more than I expected.
Mr. Ambrose rose a hand and removed the hat that hid my hair. Locks of rich hazelnut hair cascaded down my shoulder. My lips parted and my eyes widen as he laced a strand on his finger.
'You will marry me Lillian Linton.'
Fire ignited my veins as I saw the unmovable confidence he had. He was absolutely certain he was going to marry me. Deep down, through his eyes, there was no inch of doubt I will not leave this office without being Mrs. Ambrose.
'I will not be submissive or gentle. I am not gentle or sweet. My dreams and ambitions will not my deterred by marriage. I will fight you every step of the way.'
I straightened my back and closed the distance between us, until my lips were only a breath away from his and my lashes peppered his cheeks. I looked determinedly into his and conveyed a message that he could not ignore.
'I am Lillian Linton. I make my own choices. Tying myself to you in holy matrimony will not change who I am. I won't do your laundry, cook you dinner or fall to your feet every time you speak. I will continue working, earning every penny of my wages and doing whatever is right. Even if it means correcting you.'
Mr. Ambrose seemed taken aback by my words. His eyes held a turmoil grand enough to translate to his features. However, a realization soon calmed the storm and made the arctic weather settleonce again.
'You are Lillian Linton.'
I nodded. He was finally getting it.
'You are uncompromising, ungraceful and a nuisance most of the time. I know who you are.'
I opened my mouth to object, however Mr. Ambrose stood straight and looked down at me once again. He buttoned his suit nonchalantly and grabbed some documents lying on the desk.
Upon reaching my eyes, a certain emotion I couldn't decipher passed through his eyes.
'I know who you are. If I didn't I would be asking for your hand.'
His steps thundered through the deadly silent office. My head reeled with confusion, this conversation wasn't supposed to go this way. My confusion was quickly interrupted as Mr. Ambrose opened the door.
I turned around and rushed after him.
'What does that mean?'
'You, Ms. Lillian Linton, are and will be Mrs. Ambrose.'
As the door closed I knew there was no way of stopping him.
I would be Mrs. Ambrose.
And for some reason that didn't scare me as much as before. If he knew who Lillian Linton was and was willing to marry her, then I had every right to show him what Mrs. Lillian Ambrose could do.
A devious smile bloomed onto my lips.
This will be fun.
