Jayfeather POV

“For StarClan’s sake, Cloudtail, stay still for just one second,” Jayfeather snapped at the wriggling white warrior. Cloudtail was definitely not happy with having his belly wound treated, which was beginning to get on both of their nerves.

Cloudtail snapped back, “My Clan needs me to hunt and protect them, not lie here being treated like a kit!” Jayfeather almost rolled his eyes in annoyance. Why did these warriors think they were invincible and that they didn’t need help every once in a while? If they weren’t so arrogant, then his job would be made a hundred times easier. Their wounds would be gone sooner, and they would be able to do whatever instead of having to take it easy in the camp. Even so, Jayfeather would bet his tail that Cloudtail was going to open up this scratch immediately after he helped him.

Jayfeather chewed up marigold and horsetail for a moment before spitting it out onto Cloudtail’s ugly wound. He rubbed it in, then put a cover of cobwebs on top. Jayfeather’s whiskers moved with amusement as Cloudtail let out a sigh of relief. “Just stay here for a few days, and you’ll be as good as new, albeit with that scar,” Jayfeather ordered the warrior.

Without pausing to see anything else, Jayfeather padded out into the clearing, where he immediately sensed Lionblaze sitting by himself, a vole at his paws. The medicine cat walked over to his brother and plopped down.

Lionblaze asked, “Want to share?” and Jayfeather nodded. Vole sounded pretty darn good right now after dealing with stubborn warriors. The medicine cat leaned down and took a quick bite before pulling his head up quickly so that Lionblaze could get a bite of the tasty creature. Surprise flooded through him when his brother simply stayed still without taking a bite. Jayfeather dipped into Lionblaze’s thoughts for a moment to see what was up with his usually ravenous brother.

Lionblaze’s thoughts were swirling, Jayfeather noticed. Something about Cinderheart and Rosepetal. He chose not to ask about it, figuring that his brother would get to it in his own sweet time. Jayfeather heard Lionblaze claw at the ground before saying, “Jayfeather, I need your advice.”

He blinked in surprise. Lionblaze needing advice from him? That was a first. Usually it was the other way around.

Lionblaze meowed, “So a few moons ago, Cinderheart asked if I would mind waiting a few moons before becoming mates so that we could know if we were really meant for each other. Lately, it’s seemed like she’s been falling out of love with me, and I don’t want to push her into it if she doesn’t want it. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Rosepetal sort of fell for me and told me so while we were trapped in a fox den. She just seems like she might be the one who’s willing to settle down with me. I like her, so it’s a possibility. The only thing is, what Cinderheart and I had was more real; it felt like there was a real connection. She told me a little while ago that she still loves me, but so does Rosepetal. I don’t want to hurt either of them by choosing who I want. What can I do?” Jayfeather sensed that his brother was digging his claws into the ground in frustration from his situation.

“Well, you could swear off of she-cats,” Jayfeather suggested, his blank eyes lighting up with amusement.

Lionblaze retorted, “I want kits, I want to be a father, I want to have a mate! Over there, I can see Bumblestripe playing with his kits, and he’s moons younger than me. I should be the one playing with my kits; that’s what I’ve wanted for a while.”

So Lionblaze did have a soft side, one that was probably unknown to the rest of the Clan. Everyone thought of Lionblaze as a fierce warrior, not a loving father.
