Today is the third day of training, which means today we have are private sessions with the gamemakers. Today is the time that I have to show them everything I've got. I'm still thinking about what I should do. I go second, so the gamemakers should have their full attention on me.
The day has gone by smoothly so far. Only some nasty looks from Imara, but I took care of that. She glared at me and I just pointed at her and slid my hand across my throat. She automatically turned away and went back to stabbing dummies. We now sit in the dining hall waiting to be called.
Tullius goes first. When he's gone I sit with the others. We don't talk, and after what seems like forever, my I'm called.
"Good luck" Fen says as I'm getting up. "I won't need it." I say loud enough for everyone to hear. I am pushed into the training room and the doors are locked behind me.
I walk in front of where the gamemakers sit and I stand there, giving them some time to see how fit I am. I then head over to where many polished blades sit. I pick one of the newly sharpened blades and hold it for a minute. Perfectly balanced. I walk over to a training dummy and warm up by giving it a few slashes.
Once I'm comfortable, I make sure all eyes are on me by thrusting my sword up in the air. I immediately get everyone's attention and I start. I use the hardest techniques I have been taught. And after a short time I go into my fighting mode. There is no thinking. Only doing. My sword goes above my head and spins all around me, never straying from the path I will it to take.
After I think I have thoroughly impressed them, I behead the dummy and thrust my sword in the air again. The gamemakers all clap and I throw the sword at another training dummy, lodging it in the poor piece of foam's heart.
My nerves start to settle and I walk over to the elevator. One of the avoxes is staring at me with wide eyes. "What are you looking at?" I say in a testy voice. They immediately avoid eye contact and I stride into the elevator and press the button marked with a 1.
I confidently march into the sitting room where I find Tullius reclining, Zander pacing, and Ptawny sitting with her ugly legs crossed and sipping tea. Oh I hate tea.
"Did you scare one of the gamemakers so much that he fainted, because I did!" Tullius said, trying to rub his victory into every ones face. "You probably just looked at him," I retort.
"How did you do?" Zander asks. "I impressed them, to say the least," I say with a grin on my face. Zander nods and asks no more questions.
I look at Tullius and ask him what he did to impress the gamemakers so much, and he says "I swung axes at the hardest things I could find."
"That's all?" I say with a laugh. "Pretty much, but I think the gamemaker fainted from my devilishly good looks."
"And modest, too" I say sarcastically.
The rest of the day flies by and before I know it it's time to see what scores everyone got. Atlas, Tullius's stylist, Zander, Tullius, Ptawny, and I are in a room with a 100" TV. They quickly start, and Tullius's picture is shown then they announce that he got a 9.
He spits out he water he was drinking and yells "Only a 9!?!" I try to hide the smirk on my face, but I pity my friend. Turns out the gamemakers didn't like his looks as much as the rest of us do. His stylist quiets him down because my picture flashes onto the screen.
I come up with a heaping 10! That's pretty good usually the skilled and powerful only get 8s and 9s. I pat myself on the back for my 10 because no one else seems to care. They are to engrossed in every one else's scores.
I pretend to not care about their disregard and see what everyone else gets. This is what the day comes up with, or the ones I actually care about. Lanthe: 8, Halona: 9, Fen: 10, Glade: 7, Lex: 9, and Imara: 10. Fen and Imara's 10 make smy blood boil. They can try to show me up, but they will never succeed.
After athe last tribute from district 12's score has been shown, a pathetic 3, it ends and the TV is shut off. Ptawny stands up and says with a blinding smile. "We're all very proud of you two, but I must insist that you run off to bed". I happily comply.
I'm worn out from today and crash. The bed is so comfortable and I'm asleep before my head hits the pillow.
