Look After You

Chapter 1

"Chanel!" My mother's voice rang from downstairs.

I groaned and glanced at the clock.

6:30 am.

I threw the duvet off of me and checked off the day on the calendar. Tuesday, May 1st. I dragged myself into the bathroom to take a shower. I stripped off my pajamas and jumped into the icy water. I covered myself with the curtains, so the water would stop hitting me. About a couple minutes later, the warm water started flowing. I lathered my hair with my Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioned it with Dove. I washed my body and got out. I grabbed my pink towel and dried myself off. I wrapped it around my torso while brushing out my tangled blonde mess of hair. I made weird faces in the mirror, laughing when I looked like a demented walrus. I pulled out my pink and black cheetah print hair dryer and dried my hair until it was damp. My hair was incredibly curly but I didn't care at the moment. I grabbed my scruntch gel and squirted a big glob in my hand. I rubbed them together then scrunched my hair.

I proceeded into my bedroom. I opened the door of my closet and stared at it. I have nothing to wear. I grabbed a pair of skinny jeans and white tee shirt with pink letters that said, "Keep Calm and Keep Your Head Up."

I put on some eyeliner and spun around in front of my mirror. I slipped on my black Vans and headed downstairs.

"Chanel." My mom called, holding a coffee mug in one hand and balancing papers with the other.

"Yes?" I asked, grabbing a muffin.

"Can you look after Courtney today?" She asked, referring to my sister.

I nodded, "Sure. Where's Veronica?" I asked, confused.

"She's leaving early for her anniversary."

I smiled, "It's her anniversary?"

My mom nodded. Veronica takes care of my little sister Courtney. Ronni has been taking care of her since she was 2, that's when my dad left us. He didn't want to deal with a disabled child. It was selfish and wrong. He ran away with this whore he found lurking around our town.

I shook that thought out of my head.

"Carter can come over today." My mom offered.

A smile crept its way onto my face, "Okay."

Carter's my best friend. My mom is best friends with his mom, and we have dinner almost every night. My mom kissed me on the cheek as I walked towards the door. I peeked into the living room where Courtney was watching Little Einsteins.

"Hey there cutie," I smiled, walking over to her.

She gave me a crooked grin, "Hi Nell."

"I get to look after you this afternoon." I kissed her on the forehead.

"Really?" She asked, eyes sparkling.

"Really." I smiled, walking over to the door. I grabbed my back pack and walked out.

I walked the 15 minutes it took to get to school. I walked through the schoolyard, listening to all the preps gossip about one another. It made me sick. I can't wait to get out of here. It's my last year, just one more year and I'm free from this hell hole. I shivered as I walked up the front steps, wishing I brought a jacket in this chilly weather.

"Cold?" A voice startled me from behind. I spun around to be face to face with Carter.

"Hey Car." I smiled.
