Look After You

Chapter 4

I awoke to my phone blaring Dirty Little Secret. I groggily rolled over, picking up the phone and accepting the call.

"Hello?" They asked.

"Hello?" I asked in the same tone.

"Hi, is this Melissa Gallagher?"

I put on my best woman voice. "Yes, it is. May I ask who is speaking?"

"Yes. This is Grace Rivers. I'm calling from Berkley Civic Center. There is a spot open for a stage manager. We can set up an interview for you tomorrow."

My heart quickene. "Yes. That would be great."

"Okay. Great!" She said, all giddy.

I smiled at her enthusiasm, "Have a great Friday."

"You do the same."

I threw off my duvet and ran down the stairs as fast as I could.

"Mom!" I yelled, tripping on the middle stair. It sent my body flying through the air and tumbling down the stairs. I groaned every time my body hit a step.

"Are you okay?" my mom asked, coming to my aid.

I waved her off, "I'm fine."

She gave me a look that told me she didn't believe me.

"Guess what." I smiled.

"What?" She asked, holding out a hand.

I gratefully took it. "I got you an interview."

Her face brightened. "Are you serious?"

I nodded, "Tomorrow. At Berkley Civic Center as a stage manager."

"Oh, Chanel! Thank you so much!" She gasped, tackling me in a hug.

I patted her back, "You're welcome, mom. Please let go so I can breathe again."

She immediately backed away. "Right. Sorry."

I smiled, "No problem."

"I made some breakfast." My mom smiled.

"Really? What'd you fix?"

"Blueberry muffins." She grinned.

I walked in the kitchen with her, taking in the blueberry scent wafting in the air.

I sat my desk, staring at the exam. My mind was focused on my mother's interview tomorrow.

"Fifteen minutes." The teacher stated.

My heart race quickened. I only had fifteen minutes left? I haven't even begun.. I quickly scanned through, answering the questions as fast as I could and half reading them.

"Time's up." The teacher said, standing up and walking over to the first desk.

I answered the last question and flipped it over. I bombed that exam. The teacher took mine up along with everyone else's.

"You may leave now." The teacher stated, walking back over to his desk.

I quickly jumped out of mine and over to Mr. Kennedy.

"Mr. Kennedy, can I please take that exam over?" I begged.

He glanced up at me and shook his head.
