It's actually difficult to become awkward with Im Youngmin because, you know, he's quite playful as one of her best friends, and also because she spends most of her time with him while her boyfriend is at whichever club meeting he has. That doesn't mean she has stopped thinking about him pecking her forehead so suddenly though.
It just happens that her boyfriend Kim Jonghyun suddenly messages her one night at half past ten, telling her that he, unfortunately, regrettably, thinks he has to break up with her because of their heavy workload and upcoming finals, and because he also feels like they'll eventually drift apart anyway, but he promises this won't leave a single mark on their friendship. However, the single fact that he has just broken up with her doesn't sink in to her brain until she sees him the next day and he just awkwardly puts his arm around her, avoiding her gaze.
Ah. Hikari doesn't think she has ever cried so much in her whole life outside of academics and college shit. Youngmin's sitting beside her on the topmost bleacher at the outdoor court while she cries on his shoulder and Jonghyun's at an extracurricular club meeting, like always.
"Well," Youngmin clears his throat and tries for a smile while she's wiping her eyes, "At least you guys are still on good terms, yeah?" The smile quickly fades when she sighs a deep sigh. "I'm sorry."
Then, he suddenly gets up and jogs away from the court, telling her to keep sitting there and wait for him to come back, then leaves for the next ten minutes or so, running back with a red plastic bag, a grin on his lips as he hands it to her.
"Some ice cream to cheer you up."
The frozen ice cream does manage to take her mind off her now exboyfriend, and Youngmin poking her cheek beside her and ruffling her hair while she's trying to eat the popsicle doesn't help. "Yah, I'm trying to eat something, if I choke on this, you're going to-"
"It's half past five, let's go collect our pokemon!"
He suddenly grabs her hand, his popsicle held in between his teeth and his free hand reaching for his bag and the plastic bag at once. She almost trips over her shoes and he drops literally everything, even the ice cream in his mouth fall out and breaks in half when it hits the pavement, to grab her shoulders and steady her.
"Be careful, slowpoke. You're both slow and clumsy, unbelievable-"
"How dare you drop and waste your ice cream like that."
"Well, I'd rather drop my ice cream than have you fall."
She frowns at him, looking up and tilting her head, "I can always drag you down with me if I fall, though."
Youngmin falls silent all of a sudden, and she lowers her head to continue eating her popsicle. He then crouches down to gather his things and waits for her to finish eating (it doesn't take very long) before motioning for them to walk already.
He doesn't say anything anymore while leaving the court, and Hikari can't help but wonder if she said something wrong, but thinking back, she doesn't think she did.
Well, she knows that he likes her; he pretty much admitted to that when he kissed her on the forehead because why else would he do that even if he doesn't show it most of the time? She's not stupid, she knows how to find out if someone likes her; she was actually the one who confronted Jonghyun about liking her-
"Ya, Riri, are you okay?" Youngmin suddenly stops when he glances back at her, and she widens her eyes.
"What do you mean?"
"You're crying!" He adjusts the strap of his bag over his shoulder and strides the small space in between them towards her, cupping her face and gently wiping her tears with his thumbs, "Hey, stop crying!"
So he makes her promise to not cry in front of him again, but when Jonghyun catches up to them and takes notice of her red and puffy eyes, he pulls her in a tight hug because he probably knows it's because of him.
"I'm sorry, okay? I didn't mean to hurt you so much."
