Jimin was restless throughout the night. Different scenarios whirled around her brain and she thought about what could be happening to the girl. What had happened was so unrealistic for her; it seemed more suited for a plot in one of the many novels she had read in the past.
Was this what the staff had been trying to hide from her? Was this why they always stopped talking to each other the moment she entered the room? Was this why some of the rooms in her own house were locked 24/7? What about her father? Why was he always off because of a "business trip"?
What about her mother?
Jimin's mother had never been in her life. She was told that she had died in childbirth, but what if this also was a lie? Her father had made her believe that he worked as a CEO for a business enterprise, this was now obviously a lie in Jimin's eyes. She was stupid for not having pried further in the past. What exactly did her father do that required him to drag innocent girls into their house during the night?
What if the girl wasn't innocent though? Jimin thought, as she buried herself deeper into her blankets.
Her mind wandered back to last night. The girl had been dressed in all black, rips scattered her and there on the fabric. The same thing was on her skin, purple and blue bruises littered her tan skin, some had turned yellow; a sign that they were old, others bright and irritated; a sign that they had been afflicted on her body recently. This was what she could see covering her neck and arms, who knows what lay underneath her clothes.
The girl's face was blurry in her memory. Her hair was a light honey brown, long and tangled, her eyes big and sharp. They still had fight left in them. The girl's eyes had stared straight at Jimin and seemed to look right through her, the thought leaving shivers down Jimin's spine. The young girl wished she had a name to put to the girl's face.
Jimin was pulled from her thoughts when she heard the familiar heels walking down the hallway to her room, only this time each step seemed to drag on the wooden floor. Something was definitely wrong.
The door opened to reveal Mrs.Paek, the usual maid that came to greet her every morning. She always had a poker face on in front of the young mistress but today the woman had glassy eyes, tear tracks down her cheeks as she avoided the younger's gaze.
"You should wake up, you have classes today."
Jimin sat up straight, staring in concern at the older, "What happened Mrs.Paek?"
"Nothing you should be worried about, mistress. Breakfast is already ready, your father is waiting for you in the dining room so you can eat together."
"Did something happen that I don't know of?" Jimin said, ignoring the maid's statement.
"Like I said," the woman replied, her face strained, "the matter is not of your concern."
The young girl knew that the conversation had lead to a dead end so she kept her mouth shut and proceeded on her usual morning routine.
After she had gotten dressed, making sure to hurry up so as not to annoy her father, Jimin walked out of her room and started to make her way towards the staircase which would lead to the first floor. Her small feet, clad only in a pair of fluffy socks skipped down the hallway as an attempt to brighten her mood. She soon came to an abrupt stop as she heard the sound of two people conversing just around the corner.
"-was not happy with them. They were shot last night for failing to follow the master's rules."
"Wasn't one of them Mrs.Paek's lover?"
"You mean Lee Hyeon? Yes, he was. That's why she's been crying all morning after she found out."
Jimin gulped. Shot? Lee Hyeon was one of the men who helped hurry her to her room last night. They were both shot? No, that couldn't have happened.
Feeling guilty for listening to their conversation, Jimin slowly walked to the other direction, there was another staircase across the hallway. As she walked away, she couldn't but feel a sense of dread at the pit of her stomach.
