Heather was waiting outside of the school for Malcolm to meet her. They were planning on walking to the movies from there- even though it'd be a long walk, neither Heather nor Malcolm minded because it was a nice spring day and they would have more time to converse and get to know each other.
Yesterday, when Heather told her mother she'd be seeing Malcolm afterschool at the movies, she was nervous to tell her the plans. Heather's mom never liked her hanging out with all the popular boys at Bluecorn alone. The only way she'd be able to convince her to let her go, she thought, was by telling her that Malcolm was smart- and he wasn't a shallow jock.
As for Malcolm, he had to tell his brother Dewey that he had to give his movie ticket to Stevie, which was a lie. But Malcolm knew that if he told Dewey it'd be for a girl, he'd tell his mom and Malcolm would get in major trouble. So he put up with Dewey's complaints of Malcolm's betrayal, but he'd choose that any day over getting busted by his mom and looking stupid in front of Heather.
Heather was facing away from the school when she heard someone walking over to her. She turned around, but to her surprise, it was Dabney. She could see out of the corner of her eye that Malcolm was walking towards them too.
"Hey Heather! Malcolm says I can come to the movies with you guys too!" Dabney exclaimed enthusiastically. Heather paused for a second, lips parted, before speaking.
What? I thought it would just be Malcolm and I....
"Oh, okay. Uh, cool!" She was lying to herself and Dabney, but she didn't want to hurt his feelings. Malcolm came over.
"Yeah. Dabney's coming too." Malcolm said that so dully and in a way that probably hurt Dabney, Heather noticed. Again, he was being mean- but this was even ruder than he had been to Stevie. Heather then thought otherwise about her impression on Dabney tagging along- he seemed a lot nicer than Malcolm at the moment.
"Well, then let's begin walking!" Heather smiled and got onto the sidewalk, as she headed in the direction of the little theater in town. It was rather awkward with three people walking side by side by side on the narrow pavement, for there was not much room to walk, and sometimes you'd have to really squeeze through. But the three of them talked. Malcolm informed them what movie they'd be seeing, but Dabney had an issue.
"No Malcolm, I can't see it. It's PG-13! MY mom would kill me if she found out I was watching a movie like that without an adult."
Malcolm stopped right in his tracks. If he wasn't angry already, he was now infuriated. "Dabney! You're fifteen! FIFTEEN!" He was waving his hands all over the place. Heather wasn't really on either of their sides- she stood silently. She thought Dabney was being ridiculous- but she also thought Malcolm was handling the situation poorly by being so angry.
"Your mom doesn't have to know, Dabney. It's not like she's gonna be there. I mean, Malcolm already bought the tickets and he can't trade them in. But he only bought two tickets anyway, so buy the PG-13 ticket or see a different movie. I'm sorry." Heather made sure to just cut to the point. She looked at Dabney and gave him a tiny simple smile. She didn't want to come off as rude, but she also didn't want to be arguing on the sidewalk until their clothes went out of style.
Dabney agreed to man up. He looked nervous the rest of the walk there. And while he was buying his ticket. And even in his seat during the movie he was tense. But they still managed to enjoy the film. Heather sat on Malcolm's left. Dabney sat on Malcolm's right. And Malcolm, was seated in the middle.
