Bellamy
"Are you sure?" He asked through his fingers, his head in his hands.
"Well I can't be certain but based on the signs so far I'd say it's definitely a possibility." Abby said quietly and Bellamy exhaled, nodding slowly. "I'm really sorry." She said, placing her hand on his back and he knew she was crying. He couldn't bare to look.
He left the dropship staring at his feet. The snow had hardly stopped once it had begun and it was late so the camp was mostly empty. He was glad for it.
He ran a tired hand through his hair and listened to the snow crunch beneath his boots. His head hurt and he just wanted to be with her. But what would he say?
He supposed he'd think of something when the time came.
The lights were on inside the cabin and he could hear Clarke talking inside. He smiled and shook his head. Jake was 3 months old and Clarke had already decided they should be talking to him constantly, she was worried about him learning all that stuff.
Bellamy pushed the door open without knocking and Clarke was sat on the floor, her hair was down, it had grown rather long, and was tumbling down her back. Jake was sat in her lap and she was reading a book to him that was open on the floor.
She looked up when he entered and smiled.
Things had been great. Amazing even, between them since that evening. Their family was complete and he had never felt more alive...which was ironic...
"Hey where you been?" She asked, standing up and bringing Jake to him.
"Oh, Miller wanted to ask me something, boring guardsmen stuff." He shrugged and Clarke smiled faintly as she handed him his son. "Hey buddy" he cooed at him and Jake laughed a little, hitting his daddy in the face. "It's good to see you too!" Bellamy chuckled and Clarke began fussing with both their heads of messy hair.
"Oh he does that with love." She grinned, kissing Bellamy gently on the lips. "We both missed you today, think we can get someone to cover for us as parents tomorrow? Escape for a bit?" She whispered and Bellamy met her gaze for the first time.
"Um, we actually need to talk about something." Bellamy said slowly, his head thumping and his saliva like acid on his tongue.
"Okay..." Clarke said quietly as he passed by her and put Jake in his crib.
"Come, sit." He said, taking Clarke's hand and sitting down at the table.
"Bellamy what is it? You're scaring me." She said, not releasing his hand.
"Well..." he stared at the table, glanced at their son in his crib, his blue eyes watchful, his small ears listening, and when Bellamy looked at Clarke he was staring into identical blue eyes, wide and full of concern.
He swallowed the acidic bile in his throat and laughed, shaking his head. "You know what? It's not important." He said with a grin, patting Clarke's hand before standing up.
"Are you sure?" She asked, standing too but Bellamy was already taking off his shirt and then his trousers.
"Come to bed." He said softly to her, pulling her to him and kissing her on the neck just bellow the ear. "Please." He whispered, gently removing the shirt she had on (one that belonged to him.)
"Tempting." Clarke said and Bellamy kissed her on the lips now. "Very tempting." She grinned and Bellamy picked her up, her legs curling around his waist as he carried her to the bed and lay her down on her back.
Clarke
She awoke the next morning smiling softly, the sound of birdsong floating in through the open window. The bed was cold and empty beside her and when she looked around she saw that Bellamy was gone, and Jake was still sleeping soundly.
She stretched and stood up, pulling on the shirt they had left crumpled on the floor, before going to the window.
Snow coated everything but the sky was clear that morning.
Despite the cool calm floating in the silence of the cabin, some dread crept through her body as she remembered last night.
Bellamy had wanted to say something, he'd had this haunted look in his eyes. She was worried about him but she didn't know what she could do to get him to open up.
Clarke looked around the room and a mischievous smile crept onto her lips.
Bellamy
"What is this all about?" He cried, going to pull at the blindfold only to have Clarke slap his hand away. He had spent the entire day working and the sun was starting to set but Clarke had been there waiting the second his shift had ended.
"Shhh." She said, pulling him to a stop suddenly. "Okay, tada!" She cried, yanking the cloth from his eyes.
Bellamy blinked and took in the room. It was the cabin but it wasn't. There were candles everywhere, a white cloth covered the table and it was set neatly with a vase of flowers in the centre.
"What...Clarke? Where...where is Jake?" He stammered, seeing that Clarke had pushed the crib up to the side of the room and the cabin didn't stink...and that was new!
"Don't worry, my mum has him for the night." She said softly, wrapping her arms around his neck from behind. "I wanted to do something for you, you've been so tired lately and I have hardly seen you." She pouted, kissing him on the head behind the ear.
She pulled him inside and sat him down, setting down their food.
"This is amazing." He exclaimed, guilt swelling in his chest.
She smiled and began chatting away, Bellamy was eager to listen, too tired to really speak, but he had to tell her.
When they were finished eating Bellamy swallowed hard and cast his eyes downward.
"Bellamy what is it?" She asked, folding her arms and leaning foward.
"It's...no I don't want to ruin this." He shook his head.
"Please ruin it! Talk to me!" She pleaded, reaching for his hand and taking it in her own.
He loosed a breath and squeezed her hand tightly, trying to ignore the feeling of his throat closing up.
"I have been speaking to your mum." He said slowly and Clarke nodded, her expression blank as she shuffled closer to the edge of her seat. "And...well you, you remember the bad headache I got? That day in the snow? Well that hasn't been the only one..."
"Okay..." Clarke said aprehensively.
"Um...oh god, there have..." he coughed to clear his throat, now unable to look her in the eye. "There have been other things too and well Abby thinks...she, your mum thinks I could have...in some form or another...well I could have cancer."
Clarke pulled her hand away, suddenly trembling so much she had to sit on them both.
"What...what are the symptoms?" Clarke asked in a low voice.
He told her and when he took a glance at her he saw she had closed her eyes, her lips pressed together.
"That bad?" He said, trying to lighten his voice and she opened her eyes, taking his hands in hers again and locking her eyes with his.
"Bellamy I love you, we will get through this! Hell, my mum could just be being over cautious, we don't know anything for certain." He saw her glance quickly over at Jake. "I'm glad you told me, but whatever happens we will fight it side by side okay. Are you with me?"
Bellamy was stunned a moment, he felt like he should be asking her that, so he just numbly nodded and she smiled, walking around the table and kneeling down, wrapping her arms around his neck.
He kissed her on the shoulder and burried his head there, hugging her tightly because as much as he wanted to believe things werent as bad as they seemed...he couldn't quite do it.
