The Call

your phone rings
you glance at the caller id
you hesitate and look up at me
the phone call wins and you answer it
you keep your voice to a whisper
but I can hear the words you say
I know you are happy to hear her voice
I know you wish you could talk longer
I hear the happiness in your voice
you say, I have to go, and hang up
you ask, do you know who that was?
and I don't need you to tell me
it is the one you love
and it isn't me
so I politely nod my head
and go back to silently drinking my tea
the phone call still echoes my dreams
and I wish I could forget
the way you answered
you were so happy
that's something I'll never get.
