*Leo's POV*
Walking over to them at an accelerated speed, I stepped in front of Kyle just in time to move him from the blow Hunter had thrown, and moved him behind me. I didn't want to fight at all. In fact, I normally did everything I could to avoid fighting. But as before, I couldn't let him get just because of who he is. Even now, standing between the two of them, I wasn't even sure what possessed me to get involved.
I could see the shock written across his face. Just looking at his posture, and the way he held himself, I could tell he wasn't used to people challenging anything he did. Even now, all the kids in the cafeteria fell silent at my random gesture to protect this kid.
"You might want go get the hell out of my way." Hunter stated, taking a step towards me.
I didn't budge. I could tell he was trying to intimidate me with his size, but it did him little good. If might have however, if he was bigger than me. It was obvious that he worked out, but not nearly as often, or as much as I did. I couldn't explain it, but I felt angry. The guy had done nothing to me, yet a strong wave of anger seemed to flow through my body.
"Look, I understand that you're new here. Because of that, I'm willing to let this whole thing slide...if you walk away now."
"Not going to happen guy. Now, I'm sure there is some way we can solve this without me breaking your jaw, as well as everyone of your friends."
I couldn't believe I had just said that. Nothing in me wanted to fight this guy, yet here I was instigating it. I could hear Kyle whimpering behind me so I told him to go ahead and leave. He started walking away from everything but stopped short when Hunter told him not to move.
"Go ahead Kyle, you won't get hurt."
"He's not going anywhere." Hunter stated, taking another step towards me.
"Yes, he is."
I could feel the pit of anger inside of me rising to new heights as I stood there face to face with him. My hands clenched up into fists and it was taking everything I had not to use them. His friends had already started to circle around me, as well as every other kid in the cafeteria. I knew most of them were just hoping for a fight, and I wasn't sure I was going to be able go deny them what they desired.
We just stood there in silence, waiting for the other to throw the first blow. Though I had never been in a fight throughout my entire life, I was still confident that I could take him down. However, if his friends joined in, I wasn't sure I would fair very well.
As the bell for lunch to ended sounded over head, I heard a sigh of relief from behind me, but didn't risk turning around. I had figured Kyle listened to me and left, but I guess I was wrong. Hunter's posture relaxed a bit as the sound floated through the air, then turned his back to me and began walking away.
"You just made the biggest mistake of your life."
Brushing his words off and turning around, I asked Kyle why he was still here when I told him to leave. He just stood there staring at the ground. I could tell he was scared, but I still wanted an answer from him. I came the way here to make sure he didn't get hurt, yet he stayed and could have been got in the cross fire.
"Look, I understand that you were scared but next time I tell you to leave, you need to do it.
Keeping his head down and nodding sheepishly, he turned and started walking away. J decided it would be safer if I walked him to class, that way if Hunter showed back up, he wouldn't be defenceless.
Neither of us said a word to each other throughout the trip, and to be honest, I was thankful for that. I needed to get my head together, and if he was to prattle on, I wouldn't be able to think.
I couldn't believe I had gotten involved. I didn't even know the kid, yet I was about to fight for the first time in my life to make sure he was safe. Hell, I wasn't even sexually attracted to him, so it wasn't like he had that in his favor.
After racking my brain for an answer I was determined to get, I finally gave up towards the later end of school. I wasn't sure what to tell my mom when she asked how my first day went. I didn't think telling her what happened would be a good idea, but I didn't want to lie either.
"So this Kyle kid asked you to protect him from a bully?"
"Yeah. Well, sort of. I didn't have a choice to be honest."
"Well I'm glad you made a friend honey. Would you mind picking up Chloe from school? I've still got a million and one things to do."
"Sure thing mom."
After giving her a hug and taking off out the door, I put the schools address in my GPS then headed off down the road while my mind moved as fast as the car.
I didn't like how casually my mom called Kyle my friend. I've seen and read about how friends act, and they at least have a few things in common. Kyle and I don't, as far as I know. Aside from my new car that is.
I decided to put the thoughts away for now and just focus on driving. The school wasn't far off, but when I got there, I couldn't see Chloe anywhere.
Walking inside the school, my phone started to go off and I answered it after seeing who was calling. Following the directions the lady on the other end said, I walked inside the front office and saw Chloe and another girl sitting in the principal's office.
Smiling at her as I walked in, I asked what the problem was then took a seat next to between the two girls.
"Are you her father?" The woman asked, narrowing her eyes at me.
"Uh, no ma'am. I'm her older brother."
"I see. Well, I'm Miss Clark. It seems there was an altercation between Chloe and Samantha, and I wanted to get it resolved."
After introducing myself and turning to my sister, I asked her what happened then waited for a few moments before she replied.
"I don't really know. She was saying my hair is dumb then pushed me over."
Turning to the principal and raising an eyebrow, I waited for her to say something, but was cut short when the other little one went off.
"Its not my fault she has dumb hair! If she wasn't such a cootie queen, I wouldn't have said nothing."
"Who are you calling a cootie queen, you lint licker!"
It took everything I had not to break out in laughter as their insults rang in my ears. Telling the both of them to calm down. I turned to the principal and told her I was taking Chloe home.
Leading her to the car and making sure she got buckled in, I told her she shouldn't fight unless she absolutely had too.
When we made it back to the house mom was gone so I decided to make some dinner for the two of us. After asking her what she wanted, I started making chili dogs and put on a movie for her to watch in the mean time.
Grabbing my notebook, I started to write down everything that happened that day in an attempt to see if I could make sense of my actions.
Reading over it though, it seemed more like it belonged in a book. Like what I had done was an act of heroism. I didn't buy into it though. There had to be a reason why I did get involved, and I planned on figuring it out.
