it was mid-june, and a little brunette girl plopped down on the sidewalk, next to another girl she had never met before.
"hi there. my name is kitty and i'm six and i really like horses."
the other girl giggled. "hi. i'm julie. your name can't be kitty because kitties are cats."
kitty frowned. "oh."
the two girls sat in a peaceful silence for a few moments.
"do you have a best friend?" kitty asked.
"no... but my mum says that best friends are important. can we be best friends?"
"sure!"
julie hopped up from the sidewalk, and pulled kitty up with her. "come meet my mum. let's ask her if we can have a playdate."
they ran off in the direction of a tall blonde woman sitting on a bench.
"hey mum?"
she glanced up from her book. "yes, julie dear?"
"i just met this girl kitty and she's my best friend. but don't worry mum, she's not a real kitty. i remembered how you and your friend smith are allergic. so can we have a playdate?" julie asked.
"let me meet her mother, and maybe we can arrange that. now go play and leave me be."
julie smiled. "thanks mummy!"
kitty tugged julie towards a short lady pushing a baby in a stroller back and a forth across the grass. "my mom is very nice. and that's my little brother," she pointed at the baby, "his name is tommy. he likes to cry."
they walked up to the lady together. "mommy?"
"hey there kitty. who's your new friend?" she said.
"this is julie. we wanna have a playdate because we're best friends now. will you come meet her mum?"
"sure thing, pumpkin."
back across the park they went, pushing the baby along with them.
"mum," julie said. "this is kitty's mom. her name is...," julie turned to the lady. "what's your name?" she whispered.
kitty's mother laughed. "i'm diana. and you are?"
julie's mum looked up from her book. "ann."
"well ann, nice to meet you. your daughter told me that you wanted to meet me so we could plan a playdate for our kids?" diana smiled kindly.
"yes. i did," she pulled a napkin out of her bag, along with a pen. "send me a text and we can decide something." she wrote down her number in loopy numbers, then handed it to diana. "i hope our daughters may become better friends. now, we must head home. mummy's good friend smith is coming over, so it's time for you to take a nap." ann motioned for julie to follow her.
julie hugged kitty goodbye, and trotted off after her mum.
diana took kitty's hand, and they headed off in the other direction. "well, julie certainly seems very nice."
"what about her mom? did you like her?"
"oh, well, she was... okay. however, that's not important. let's head home and get you and tommy a snack."
