"Are you insane like me? Been in pain like me?"
Mitch knocked out for the whole drive. When Freya was almost at the hotel she stopped at a gas station and grabbed some food for them. She didn't know what kind of food he preferred, so she just got a bunch of different kinds.
She finally pulled up to the hotel and went to get them a room. It was an old dingy looking building but Freya knew it was nicer on the inside. She's stayed here plenty of tines, and the best part was its cheap.
"Mitch?" He lets out a mixture of a sigh and a grunt, letting Freya know hes somewhat awake. "I'm gonna go get us a room." She gets out of the car and heads in the building.
The lady at the front greets her with enthusiastic hello to which Freya relpies monotonous. It was that she meant to be rude, its just that so much shit happened today she couldn't wait to shower and sleep.
"I need one room with two beds please." The lady looked around then replied, "I'm sorry hun we only have rooms with one bed right now." Freya grits her teeth. She knows the woman is lying because no one really ever stays at this hotel due to the exterior of the place, and assumes that when the lady looked around she saw Mitch in the passenger seat of the car.
She sighs, "Can you check again?"
"I'm sorry hun, I'm the only one working tonight and there are no other rooms left that have two beds." Freya growls under her breath, "Fine!" She slaps $10 on the desk. The lady looks at her and sighs, "I'm sorry but it cost $20 a night to stay here." Freya scoffs, "Well seeing as you're refusing to give me a two bed room even though we both know there are some available its gonna cost me $10 dollars a night to stay here hun." She narrows her eyes at the women to show she means what she said and the women shrinks down in her chair.
"So how long have you and him been together?" Freya looks up from her hands to the women and back to her car to see Mitch leaning his head against the window, asleep again. She blushes, "Oh, um we dont-were not um were not dating." She tucks a piece of hair behind her ear. The women raises her brows then hands Freya the key card. "Oh yea sure hun" , she mocks her, "your rooms on the second floor, enjoy your stay." With a huff Freya grabs the key then heads outside.
She opens the back door of the car and grabs the bag she stole from the gym that had the food and some clothes in it. She slipped that over her shoulder then opened the passenger side door and helped Mitch out and to there room. When they got there she sat him in a chair, opened the bag, grabbed some clothes, then placed the bag on the table. She set the clothes on the bed.
"Really, one bed?" Freya puffs out air and turns to Mitch completely done with all the bullshit she's had to deal with lately, "The lady at the desk swore that this was all they had available." She points at the bag, "There's some food in there if your hungry." Mitch opens the bag and she grabs her stuff, heading to the shower, but before she could Mitch stopped her. "Freya?" She turned around to look at him. "What did you mean? When you said I didn't know the real you?" She looks at him, a look on her face that said are you kidding me, "Why do you wanna know so bad huh? Whats the point?" He stares at her and she rolls her eyes then gets up and makes her way towards the shower.
"I dont hate you."
She looked at him confused and he continued, "I-I don't I mean it, its just my fiancé, I just-I miss her you know?" Mitch didnt know why he was telling her this but he felt like he could, like he should tell her.
She nodded, "Yea, I know what thas like." She sighs and sits on the bed, "You know my family wasn't like that. Like how you think it was. How everyone thinks it was. We were an average family."
My dad would come home from work-we never really knew what his job was but he brought in money and we trusted him-he would kiss my mom on the cheek and say that whatever she was cooking smelled good." Freya laughed at that thought, " We would give him a look because we all knew it smelt horrible but we ate it anyways. My younger sister would be coloring or reading somewhere and me and my older sister, "she pauses, "A-Annalise, me and her would always argue but it was harmless because we knew we loved eachother." Mith looked at her, an expression he had never seen on her face: sorrow and regret.
"Then my sister turned 13, and when she was walking home one day some group of guys that it would be cool to 'ruff' her up an-and one of them they- they um the took it too far." Freya shakes her head trying to push away the tears she felt pooling in her eyes, "My family changed they looked at Annalise differently. Like she was a rare species of some sort, and I think that only made it worse for her. My father started to train us, by teaching us easy things we could use to get out of situations. It wasnt as extreme yet, but my sister-she hated it. Her and my father would always start screaming at eachother which ended up with him saying something he shouldn't have and her storming away crying because it reminded her of what happened that day." Mitch figured it out now. Freya used to just be some average girl when tradgedy ruined her life. She never wanted to end up how she was.
"A little while after my sister turned 14 it was near my birthday. Ours were a couple days apart and we always tried to outdue the other. I remeber my dad was at work my younger sister at school and I was sick and annalise just skipped like she always did. My mom went to go get groceries for dinner and I remember finding her." Tears were falling down Freya's cheeks now, "I-I remember seeing all the blood and running to her shaking her, be-begging her to come back."
"That day changed my family." She lets out a dry laugh, "My mother pretty much became catatonic. She never spoke anymore. She cooked, cleaned, ate but other than that she was pretty much dead, just staring at the wall like she wasn't really there. Like she didn't actually exist. My sister she got in fights, said things she shouldn't have, things that no one her age should have known or had to worry about, and she would disappear then reappear days later. She was 5 and hanging out with 17 year olds. And my father, m-my father he hated the world. He thought that it should pay. And so instead of his small job in the terrorist buisness he became the leader. My training changed to something far more dangerous and deadly. And my family, it was never the same."
Freya looked up after she finished her story to see Mitch approaching her. She stood up slowly and carefully she didn't know what he was planning on doing but she froze when he engulfed her into a hug.
Mitch felt Freya tense up under his touch until she finally relaxed and hugged him back. He rubed small circles in her back and told her it was okay as she let all her tears out. He realized that Freya was just as much of a mess as he was, that they were almost exactly alike. They had both lost people they cared about most.
When Freya let go of Mitch's shirt and she looked up at him. He placed his hnads on her cheeks and wiped some of the remaining tears off her face. His eyes were soft and he looked at Freya with such care it scared her. She cleared her throat and stepped back, "Im gonna go shower, you should eat something, and you can have the bed." She turns and rushes to the shower before Mitch could say anything.
