Chapter Two - Spilling the Precious Secret
I awoke to birds singing. It was a lovely sound and I found myself smiling as I climbed out of bed. Today was going to be a good day. Every morning I would stand in front of the mirror and look at myself. It was my own unique way of telling myself that I had changed.
So imagine my shock when I stepped in front of the mirror. It wasn't the mass of red hair that sat on top of my head or the crumpled clothing of my pajama's or the drool stain on the corner of my mouth that shocked me; that was my normal appearance after a good night's rest. It was all the sticky notes that dotted my mirror. I saw blue ones and pink ones, orange ones hidden by white ones.
I could still feel myself smiling when I read them. It had to be the doing of my parents. Each one was a comment. Whether it be a joke or a compliment on how I look. I love the fire on top of your head. I giggled at that one. Don't piss me off today, I'm running out of places to hide the bodies. My smile was permanently etched onto my face as I made my way downstairs.
I stopped at the door of the kitchen, hiding away from my parents as I listened to them talking. I often did this, just loving they way their usual morning banter always put me in a good mood.
"Last night was amazing," my mom said dreamily and I heard her place a kiss on my father's cheek.
"You only deserve the best." I heard him say lovingly before she let out a yelp and a series of giggles. My parents were so in love. I wanted that kind of love when I was older.
"You know, since last night was so good..." my father drawled out and that's when I decided to walk in. Sometimes my parents got carried away and my faithful hearing just had to let me know when those times were. This was one of those times.
"Morning mom." I smiled and placed a kiss on my mother's red cheek. She squirmed out of my fathers lap and stumbled back to the stove. "Dad." I greeted him with a stern look before he chuckled and pulled me onto his lap. I was not able to hide the smile that made its was onto my face.
"Good morning darling," he placed a kiss on my cheek and I gave him a quick hug.
"Oh honey I forgot to tell you. This came for you this morning," my mom wiggled her eyebrows at me as she handed me a black envelope.
"Mom, please don't." I slapped a hand to my forehead and took the envelope with a flushed face. Sometimes I wish she wasn't so straight forward.
"You never know. It could be a guy!" She exclaimed and my father cleared his throat, trying not to bring up the obvious past. And probably because - being the loving father that he was - he didn't want to know what I was up to or anything about boys. He was just so considerate.
"I'm going to read this in private and if there's anything worth telling you, I will." I rushed out the room and into my bedroom where I dropped onto my bed. I gently opened the envelope, not wanting to damage it. A piece of white paper fell out and my eyes were drawn to the neat, cursive handwriting. The black ink was slightly smudged where the person had started.
Starbuck's, 3 this afternoon? I hope you can make it. I want to thank you.
I felt my heart flutter inside my chest as butterflies suddenly sprang up inside my stomach. I placed a hand to my cheek to cool my face down. It was him. It was the mystery guy and he wanted to thank me. With shaky fingers I put the paper back inside and put the envelope at the bottom of my underwear draw. Nobody would find it there.
"Breakfast is ready." I heard my mom call and I went to grab some food.
"Pancakes, yum." I licked my lips and sat next to my father who had already started on his pile. After a very embarrassing breakfast where questions about my love and sex life were brought up continuously, I went to have a shower. I hopped in and out before changing into a dark blue summer dress.
