A Week Later.
Christine's P.O.V.
I was sitting in the living room, half asleep, when an alarming sound made me jump up. It was followed by Leah yelling for me. I ran down the hallway to her room, trying not to bust my ass in my socks. I threw the door open to find Leah. She was perched in the edge of her bed, holding her stomach.
"Contractions." Leah confirmed what I feared.
Of course this had to happen when Sam and Dean are gone. Stay calm, Chris. Keep it together for Leah.
"Can you stand?" I asked as I made my way to her.
"I think so. They're pretty far apart, but Goddamn they hurt." Leah answered.
I helped her up. "You wanna head to the car and I'll call Dean?"
"Sounds like a plan." Leah said through gritted teeth.
"I'll grab the overnight bag on my way out." I told her.
Leah nodded and started walking slowly in the direction of the garage. I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Dean's number.
"What's up?" Dean answered on the third ring.
"Leah's having contractions. I'm about to take her to the hospital." I said, cutting to the chase.
"Wait. What? That's not supposed to happen until next week." Dean sounded like he was about to panic.
"Babies rarely ever come when they're supposed to, Dean." I told him as I flung open the hall closet to grab the bag and a pair of Sam's slippers.
"Gather our shit and get in the car, Sammy." I heard Dean say. "We'll be there as soon as we can."
"We're about to leave the bunker." I said before hanging up. I'm sure he realizes that I don't have time to chat.
I hurried to the car with the bag in hand. Leah was already in the passenger seat, she looked more than ready to get going.
"They're on their way." I told her before starting the car.
"Good. I think my water just broke." Leah replied.
"You think?"
"At this point in pregnancy, if I sigh too hard I pee. So..."
"Oh, that's nice." I replied as we pulled onto the main road.
I drove faster than I ever had before in my life. I didn't relax until Leah was in a room in the maternity ward being looked over by doctors. I stepped outside the room to text Sam an update. Not long after the doctor came out and smiled at me.
"Your girlfriend is doing fine." He announced.
"My what? Oh, no. Leah is my best friend. Her boyfriend is on his way."
The doctor's cheeks turned red. "I'm really sorry. I should never assume. You just seemed so concerned."
I chuckled. "It's okay, really."
He nodded awkwardly and walked away quickly. I went back into the room to check on Leah and tell her what just happened.
Just when I thought I was going to have to stand in for Dean in the delivery room he came sprinting through the hallway.
"How is she?" He asked, out of breath.
"The doc is on his way to see if she's ready to start pushing." I answered.
Dean flashed me a thumbs up before going in the room and shutting the door behind him. Sam showed up right as the doctor and two nurses went into Leah's room.
"How's everything going?" Sam asked after he gave me a hug and a kiss.
"With me, or the youngest Winchester?" We headed towards the waiting room to sit down.
"Both."
"Well, I'm doing fine. Although I am worried about Leah. I don't think Mary Grace Winchester has made an appearance yet."
"Mary Grace, huh?"
I nodded my head. "I helped Leah pick it out."
"Sounds good." Sam said as he intertwined his fingers with mine.
Leah's P.O.V.
After what felt like a decade of pushing, a beautiful baby girl was laid on my chest. I know that everyone says that giving birth is beautiful. The pain definitely wasn't beautiful. But the end result was. Before I could get used to the feeling of my daughter's heartbeat above mine, a nurse whisked her away. Dean was still beside me, he hasn't left my side since he got here.
Dean leaned down and kissed my forehead. "You did good, babe."
"Thanks. My body did just about everything itself though. She's beautiful."
"That she is. Did you decide on a middle name?"
"Grace. It just seems right."
"Mary Grace. It does have a ring to it. You catch a few winks and I'll handle any of the leftover parental duties." Dean assured me.
"So you'll learn how to breast feed for me?" I asked.
"Anything for you." Dean answered, chuckling.
I smiled at him. "Actually I think they'll be moving me to a different room soon. So I'll hold off on the sleep."
A few minutes after I completed my sentence there was a knock on the door.
"Miss Waters, we're about to move you to a postpartum room on the next floor. After you get settled a nurse will bring your baby to you." A smiling nurse said as she walked to the bed with a wheelchair.
Dean helped me into the wheelchair and gathered my stuff before following us to my new room.
"I'll be back in a few minutes with the birth certificate. Your baby should be brought in shortly." The nurse informed us."Sounds good." I told her as she made her way to the door.
"I can't wait to see Mary Grace again." Dean said after the room fell into silence.
"Me either."
After we both signed leftover paperwork Mary was brought into our room in a wheeled bassinet. She seemed much more alert now. Her hair looked almost orange in the light coming from the fluorescent bulbs. When I held her in my arms she opened her eyes, that looked exactly like her dad's, and smiled at me. I thought that my heart couldn't swell anymore than it did that moment, but I was wrong. When I passed our happy baby girl to Dean, I thought my heart would burst. He held her gently and looked at her as if she was his entire world.
Not a single thing could ruin this day for me.
