Chapter thirty:

"No." The word kept echoing in her head and with every passing second she could feel her heart shattering as she felt utterly humiliated. She wanted to pretend this never happened and get out of the kitchen but her legs felt like they were made of lead as they refused to move.

"Why?" The word escaped her lips in a fleeting voice.

When he remained unbelievably quiet and his face as stoic as a stone, she realised that he really had rejected her.

After everything that she had been through for him.

"Why, Christian? Why don't you want me? Am I not your Mate?" She asked, this time her voice grew louder.

"Because it's not your problem; you don't have to worry about that," he blatantly said.

She wanted to scream and shout at him for being so unreasonable and childish. He wasn't the only one who was going through the pain of losing someone. After everything that had happened with Luke, she had come back thinking at least he could somewhat ease her conscience. But she knew not to put her troubles on him. He, too, had just lost his mother. Moreover, Linda meant something to her too. She loved Linda as well-maybe not as much as he did, but she admired and adored her. How could she ever forget the woman and her absolutely admirable personality? But she didn't let herself think too much about her because then she would end up crying and she had to be strong for Christian's sake. But now, he was just being so... selfish.

Taking deep breaths, she looked down to avoid allowing him to see her being so vulnerable as she bit down hard on her lip to stop the tears. She rapidly blinked her eyes to prevent the tears from flowing.

"Christian, this is not just your problem. When you told me about yourself and I decided to stick around, this whole thing also became my problem. When you told me to come to that ceremony and I got this mark with you, then it became my problem. When I told you that I love you, this became my problem. You can't just cut me off because I'm not like you. When will you ever stop seeing me as an outsider and see that I'm really trying here to win your heart and trust?" She wasn't shouting or accusing him; she was speaking to him monotonously and the way she sounded so mechanical and unconnected made finally look at her.

He stared at her for a long time and saw her looking back at him with almost disinterest and coldness. "This fight isn't yours. Just go home."

"Fine, but know this. If I go now, then I'm never coming back." She understood that he was in a bad place and she felt sorry for him and sympathised with him but this relationship of theirs had become so dysfunctional that she sometimes wondered whether she did a mistake agreeing to go out with him the other night in the Wilsons' diner. But as the minutes ticked by, both of them remained still in their positions and they continued to stare at each other; each trying to understand what the other person was thinking.

"I'll see you later," he finally said breaking the silence.

"There's no later, Christian!" She shouted, finally losing her last straw. "You can't just push me away like this when you're going through a rough time. Can't you see that I'm worried about you?! You hardly eat, you don't talk at all and you don't even move out of that goddamned bed! I know that you're not feeling okay and I'm sorry about that, but talk to me! Seeing you like this is killing me and you ignoring me and everything else isn't going to make it better, Christian! What are you thinking? Please, let your feelings out. Please," her screaming voice had reduced to a whisper as the tears streamed down her face. She had let Luke die without telling him how much he truly meant to her. But she wasn't going to let herself do that mistake again. But right now, Christian was making her lose her sanity. She was hurt that despite her being his Mate, he didn't even feel comfortable enough with her to share his emotions. She wanted to kick herself for crying and causing him more worry but the longer she thought about him, the more useless she felt.
